Have definite plans for China and the Serengeti upcoming.

Some others that are high: Patagonia, Machu Picchu, Everest Base Camp (seen Everest from a plane but not feet on the ground), New Zealand.

Thailand.

Specifically, bathing an elephant on the beach in Thailand.

We are heading back to Japan later this year and are trying our hardest to incorporate a quick trip to Thailand. It's actually pretty cheap to fly from Tokyo to Bangkok.

Likely the elephant in the beach area is abused FYI

Not to burst your bubble. There are sanctuaries in Chang Mai though.

My white buffalo currently is Myanmar and Bagan. Was all booked to go until my travel buddy got a crazy illness two months before departure.

Now that I have a kid it may be years before I can go.

Japan is planned for next year though.

Japan is AMAZING.

We had the opportunity to go last fall and I figured I would check it out, enjoy myself, add it to the list of cool experiences I've been fortunate enough to have. One and done, you know?

NOPE.

That country is absolutely embedded in my soul and I cannot wait to get back. I have never felt more at peace in my life as I did there. It is truly so, so awesome.

Ya I'm looking forward to it. Should be going in November with the leaves changing.

Already done way too much googling and reading the various Japan threads on this board. Kinda bummed sumo is in Fukuoka but only a small part of everything to see/do.

Trying to squeeze a scenic onsen into the schedule to make up for it.

Teddy, I lived in the general Fukuoka area for two years. Kyushu rocks. Great people. Fukuoka is an impressive place, probably Japan’s most underrated city imho. Head To Oita Prefecture and go to the Beppu onsens. There is a ridiculously perfect onsen city I used to go to called Yufuin. It’s amazing. The whole area is on fire from Aso San ( biggest caldera in the world) so there are onsens everywhere.

Ya that area looked like the best scenic onsen area I found. Just not sure I'll be able to make it down fast enough. Once the dates are set I can see what happens. Traveling with a kid so we'll be going slower.

Beppu is onsen ground zero-but it’s a bit garish. I would recommend taking the children to Miyako- machi ( wild monkeys) and the Seven Hells (Jigoku). Google the latter.

Also Mt Aso ( volcano). Also google Yufuin , which is an upscale onsen city. You MUST go to an onsen- it’s quintessentially authentic Japan in a way most gaijin never experience the country.

Also learning basic phrases in Japanese is as easy as any language. VERY easy for native English speakers. Let me know if you have any questions.

Mount Aniakchak

Caldera in which you can raft out of to saltwater about 30 miles away.

Given its remote location and challenging weather conditions, Aniakchak is one of the most wild and least visited places in the National Park System.

I've been 3 times now and absolutely have no issues making time for time there on my way back from Phillipines.

Speaking of rugged- I just completed a massive climb up the steps of the Monte Carlo casino in Monaco. It was harrowing. I dodged Bentley’s , $10,000 hookers, errant Russian oligarchs, etc. Trip report forthcoming.

I think you would be crazy to do that, btw. Holy shite. Nope. Nope. Nope.

You should make Kansas last. That way you will have a good reason to go to Kansas.
