Wife and I are going to Boston this summer and were planning to use subway to get around and not rent a car. We do not plan to leave Boston so is that realistic or should we rent a car? TIA

No need for a car. The T works great and it's an incredibly walkable city. IMO, walking Boston is one of my favorite things to do.

Between Uber and walking, you can get all over Boston

You can take the T on a weekend for a cheap flat rate to surrounding areas such as Salem

DO NOT rent a car. The roads here are confusing, parking is expensive, and drivers are…less than friendly.

The T (aka the subway) will get you anywhere you need to go, and if you don’t feel like dealing with the T at any point, Ubers are plentiful and easier than dealing with driving.

Also, when you leave the airport, you can either Uber (expensive) or you can take the Silver Line (bus) to the red line (T) and get wherever you need to go easily from there for free.

The T may be the most effe3cient public transport I've been on. You can buy a week pass for like $25 too.

No need for car in Boston as others have indicated.
The driving part is not that bad but it's the parking that is an absolute nightmare anywhere in the city and very expensive.

Went with family a couple of years ago no need for a car. Trains or Uber will take you to everything you need in the area. Kennedy museum, Harvard, Red Sox games etc…

When I was a kid I was told not to rent a car, that car theft was huge in Boston.

Take the T. Very convenient.

Have dinner at Giacomos one night.

I was there about a month ago and the system is honestly great. It's probably the best in North America in terms of routes, crime, cleanliness, etc. We stayed near TD Garden, took the blue line to Bowdoin- 20 minutes from airport station to hotel lobby.

The only two places that were a bit more difficult to get to were Bunker Hill/USS Constitution and the JFK Library. The walk shouldn't be bad at all in the summer but it was pouring rain at 34F on our free day. We waited until we had the rental to go to JFK (free parking)

The T was convenient. We stayed in Maverick and it was just a short hop downtown. Even took the train up north to a beach. System is a lot cleaner than NY's metro.

I wouldn’t rent a car, you’ll find it more work than it’s worth. You’ll be looking for parking or spending money on garages.

It’s a small town and if the distance isn’t walkable, you can always take an Uber.

I’m not a huge fan of the T, it’s dirty, and it isn’t well maintained. I assume Boston just didn’t care to spend the money, which is a shame. They should take better care of their city. It’s commonly used though.

finding parking isn't easy, and the roads are confusing as hell. GPS's have a hard time working b/c of how often you're in a tunnel and/or another road is on top or below you.

Better off taking the subway and ubering, as well as walking.

Interesting take considering the MBTA is in the middle of an almost $10b, 5 year renovation and expansion. There’s work to be done, but I think our city is pretty well taken care of. But you’re entitled to your opinion.

Good for you? I never said you didn’t. I just disagreed with your opinion.
