Heading there next month. Staying at St. Regis for 5 nights OWB. Just the wife and I for an anniversary trip. Everything is expensive as heck, guess that's why it's a bucket list destination. Has anyone here been and any recs?

- With the recent stock market crash, I may have to cancel and head to Grand Isle instead

The isle so nice they named it twice.

Doesn’t quite have the same rhythm in Taiwanese.

Don’t cancel….best vacay ever. Pics don’t do this place justice. Take the jet ski tour. Dinner at La Villa Mahana is a must. Expensive, yes, but oh so worth it!

My wife and I loved our trip to Bora Bora. We did a jet ski tour and did the snorkeling tour with the rays and sharks. I would recommend both. I wouldn't try and fill up your days with too many activities though since a big part of why people go to Bora Bora is to relax and enjoy the amazing scenery.

We never made it to the main island, so I can't recommend anything there. From what I remember, the water taxis too and from the main island were somewhat sporadic and we didn't want to spend a large part of our day there. Setting up a private transfer for dinner might be nice though.

Aerial view into Bora Bora

St. Regis's boat taxi that takes you to and from the Airport. 15 min boat ride ($125 pp rt). Wife taking about 2000 pictures lol.

Our Bungalow view straight from the bed

Mt. Otemanu view from our deck. (Deluxe Overwater Villa, 1550 sq ft)

St. Regis provides 24/7 personal butler service which sets it apart from the other 5 star resorts. Ours was a French student from Paris bringing morning coffee/tea/cocoa. The movie Couples Retreat loops 24 hrs in the room (The only English channel).

Everyone gets a bike to explore the 44 acre resort.

Iconic lagoon view.

Sunset views

Snorkeling. So dense that fish were constantly bumping into me.

Went to the Main Island for a day. Vaitape is the largest city of Bora Bora Island in French Polynesia, population 5000. Not much there, many Black Pearl shops.

Overall awesome trip!! Just as beautiful as the computer screen savers, if not more stunning. Weather was awesome with a nice breeze and water clear as any I've ever seen. Wife loves it and already wants to put it in the vacation rotation

Glad you had a great time. Bora Bora is one of my favorite spots.

We rode bicycles around the one (at the time) road around the island.

Great pics

Probably as close as I’ll ever get it is to live vicariously through pics such as these

I will therefore envision a fun week with that French student in paradise

Awesome pictures. Was that snorkeling from right outside of the bungalow or another spot?

Has anyone ever done bora bora and the Maldives to say which one is better?
I know I’m going to want to do an owb trip one day, but I’m sure it will be a once in a lifetime and have to pick one over the other.

I can’t speak for the Maldives but I will say I’m not sure you can compare them as islands. French Polynesia is made up of mountainous volcanic islands. The Maldives are coral atolls. French Polynesian islands will be more beautiful with much more varied terrain. The Maldives are about the accommodations and the water. That said, there are first rate hotels and resorts and incredibly beautiful water in French Polynesia. Hope this helped.

Not asking specifics but what budget would you recommend for this trip?

$1200/ day plus airfare.

The food at the St. Regis Bora Bora is very expensive for what you get, but you won’t mind while you are drinking Hinano on the beach. I would bring some wine from duty free if that is your first stop. It will be way cheaper than what your butler brings you.

Amazing. My number 1 bucket list destination. I saw it in a text book around 1990. I said then, that’s where I’m going on my honeymoon. But when I started to look into it when I got married in 2006 I quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to afford it as a newlywed.

Thanks for the refresher. Looks as wonderful as I remember. Was our honeymoon trip forever ago but at the Black Pearl. OWB on Moorea and beachfront on BB. Damn, how did I get so old.

Went for our honeymoon back in 2016. We stayed at the Le Meridian and did Jet Skiing and Snorkeling. We had reservations at La Villa Mahana but I got traveler sick on our 4th day there from a jack and coke I think and just physically couldn't go. We did make it to Bloody Mary's though which was pretty cool.

We went in April and I think for our hotel and airfare it was 7k. Brought another 3k on the trip and ended up bringing about 1k back home with me. It was incredibly beautiful and the views are just insane, but we spent a lot of the time in the room since honeymoon and you have to do boat taxis everywhere. Didn't think the food was super great at Le Meridian. I would imagine the St Regis is better.

Still only one main road. We took a bus around the entire island (about 20 mins).

That was actually within the St. Regis protected lagoonarium. Over 120 species of fish there. I didn't feel like I needed a separate snorkeling trip afterwards. I did snorkel around the pilings of the OWBs. Some cool and huge fishes like to hang out there but not nearly as populated. People were probably thinking I was a Peeping Tom trying to look through their glass floors.

When deciding on OWBs, these two aspirational destination are always the first two that comes to mind. I choose Bora Bora b/c it seemed to have more mountains/ scenery (as VABuck mentioned) and flight was shorter than the Maldives. With that said, after a few days home, I already booked the Conrad Maldives for next year.
