We just made this trip from Shreveport. After studying maps and talking to my neighbors who have been to Sturgis over a dozen times and driven every route, we drove to Salina KS first day (9 hrs 40 mins). Martinelli’s Little Italy downtown was a good dinner.
Day two we drove up to York NE and hit I-80 to Ogallala, then turned on Hwy 26, then 385 to Rapid City. 10.5 hours of drive time. This kept us in fairly well traveled areas with plenty of gas stations. You can cut up the middle of NE through some Indian reservations, but if you break down, you may be screwed. My neighbor says you better top off every time you can in that part of the world because gas stations may be scarce.
Rented a VRBO walking distance to downtown RC. So glad we did that instead of either of the big hotels downtown. We had a full kitchen, grill, washer and dryer, nice deck, etc. There are cheaper hotels outside of downtown, but we like to hit downtown spots and drink, so those were inconvenient.
We daytripped every day to Mt Rushmore (exceeded my expectations based on others dissing it; we thought it was great, and best viewed through the 4 tunnels along Iron Mountain Road in Custer State Park), Crazy Horse, Custer State Park (do not miss; can easily spend all day there; stop at the wildlife center, which pointed us down a gravel road to a huge herd of Buffalo that many folks who stayed on the main road missed), Badlands National Park (Wall Drugs is near; just a huge T-shirt and magnet store but you have to go so you can say it sucked; Minuteman Missile Center is near too and worth a 30 minute stop), Devils Tower (well worth the trip, hike the mile trail around it, and eat at the Diamond Bar and Grill near the entrance). We hit Spearfish Canyon and Deadwood on the way back from DT. Deadwood stop was just for a beer at the No. 10 Saloon where Wild Bill went down and a visit to Mount Moriah cemetery. That cemetery is steeeeep. You may want to do the guided bus tour of it.
We found lots of good food and drink in RC. We also got to know their car washes well. We got hella bug splatter daily, plus mud when we drove the long dirt road out the back of Badlands to Hwy 44 and experienced a rare rain. But, hey, double rainbow!

Have you been in the winter? Don’t get me wrong it’s a fun trip, but when I had to travel there for work in January it was bitterly cold.
Yeah we went up there a few years ago in the summer and really enjoyed Rapid City. Told my wife I could see it as a potential place to move to in the future.
Then during a walk in downtown I saw these large plastic extensions on top of the fire hydrants. I asked someone what they were for and they said they were so when the snow buried the fire hydrants the firemen could still find them. Scratched it off the list after that.

Thanks to this thread, I am now booking a trip up there in late September.
Thanks, OP.

Let us know how it goes. Any pointers too when you get back.
Looks like we'll only have time for either Badlands or Devils Tower, not both. Which one should we do?

Devils tower is cool, but Badlands beats it any day.

[/img] Have you decided on your route yet? When we went we drove in on I 90 from eastern SD; exited at Wall and went to Wall Drug store for a short visit and then took Hwy 240 south to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. Then Hwy 44 to Rapid City.
We just drove through it but we take a detour to Roberts Prairie Dog Town to see the prairie dogs. IIRC that was 6 miles one way on an unpaved road. Don't do that if you go to Devils Tower, there are prairie dogs next to the entrance road.
Or you could exit where the Minute Man Missle Silo is and take that road to the BR VC and then Hwy 240 north to Wall. Unless you do some hikes that will take 2 to 4 hours I would guess.
[/img] I wasn't disappointed in Deadwood but I don't recall having high expectations. Stop in the visitor center on the east side of town and find out what's going on. You can park there and walk into town or there is (was) a free parking garage in the center of town.
We didn't ride the stage but we did eat at that Saloon # 10 and it was a good sandwich. There is (was) another Saloon # 10 that had a guy telling the story of Wild Bill Hickok, we got there late and didn't have a seat so we didn't stay for all of it. There was also a play about the trial of Jack McCall, the guy that shot WBH.
If I had to choose, I would go to Devils Tower National Monument.
[/img];
[/img] We drove to DT from the north on Hwy 24, you can see the tower from a long distance. If you go that route stop by the oldest general store in WY. It's in Aladdin, population 15 in 2019.
[/img] Definitely stop by the Visitor Center at Custer State Park and watch the short video. Drive Iron Mt Road, Hwy 16 A, south to north so you see Mt. Rushmore through the tunnels.

There is also a prairie dog village south of wall before you get to badlands. Some in Custer state park as well if visiting there.

Agree with Spearfish Canyon, it’s pristine and beautiful.
My favorite was Crazy Horse Monument; the story is incredible. The Visitors Center has a film that’s 20-30 minutes and it’s definitely worth watching. The Corn Palace in Mitchell sounds like a tourist trap, but I really liked it. I think it would be really cool in the fall. We stayed just outside of Deadwood, but I was disappointed in the town itself. So many casinos…

Started this thread with the intention of going to Deadwood as the main course and everything else as sides. As it sounds now, the cemetery might be the only thing worth doing in Deadwood.

I have lived in Rapid for about three years now (originally from Louisiana) and the tips you’ve gotten have been pretty spot on (other than about winter weather- while higher elevations in the hills get a good bit of snow, Rapid City has one of those microclimates due to winds and being protected by the Black Hills that, while it does snow during winter, it melts in a day or two because it doesn’t stay cold here like it does in the eastern part of the state. It may snow one day, and be 55° the next day, thanks to the Chinook winds. It’s really not too bad- at least not in my experience thus far.)
Regarding restaurants in Custer, a previous poster is correct that Black Hills Burger is no more. However, I recommend a place called The Custer Wolf to fill the void. They have great burgers and a fried green bean appetizer that even my green bean-hating daughter loves. I’ve never had a bad meal there.
I’m not sure when your exact dates are, but fall foliage should be great in Spearfish Canyon and elsewhere around mid-September.
Enjoy the trip! Can’t go wrong with Custer State Park, Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, and Spearfish Canyon. This is a lovely part of the world.

Rushmore was very disappointing.
Deadwood is pretty cheesy.
The badlands were incredible. Take a full long day to explore the badlands.

Rushmore really isn't great. Custer State Park should be the #1 choice when going to the Black Hills. Then spend some time in one of the towns out there.
Going back in 3 weeks from today. Excited because I'll have time to see Devils Tower this time.

Any suggestions on where to stay in Hill City? Or Custer?

If the Purple Pie Place is open (summer and fall) in Custer, go there.
Delicious treats!
We tent camped in the Badlands and at Sylvan Lake Black Hills.
2 weeks in SD - had a great time. Lots of hiking and sight-seeing.
Rushmore
Devil's Tower
Crazy Horse
