I'm planning a fall trip for my husband and have narrowed it down to two options. Before I go too far with my planning, I thought I'd ask for opinions, given that he may share similar interests with many of you.
He likes hiking, visiting new places, and LSU football. We like to stay in nice/safe/comfortable places; nothing fancy. He's not much into relaxing on the beach. We're not big drinkers. We usually take about two family vacations and a couple of 'just us' trips per year. This one would just be the two of us. Recent trips we've taken include: Ireland/England, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, California, Mexico. We are going to Italy this summer.
Trip will be about a week long. Budget not really an issue.
Option 1: Iceland last week of October. This is an lsu bye week. I have read that a week in Iceland is long enough. Thanks to recent posters for providing their Iceland itineraries. We'd rent a car, hike, see the sights.
Option 2: Asheville/Blue ridge/ smoky mtn national park + LSU game in Knoxville on November 18th. I've been to this area but he has not. This sounds less exciting to me but there should be good hikes and it does add in LSU.

Which would you prefer?

It will be cold. We went around that time, cold, but still had a great time. Certainly not high tourist season. We stayed at Icelandair Reyk Marina and loved it.

I think option 2 would be better for that time of year, especially if he's never been to that area. It would probably be really nice with fall colors too.

Mid-November in Knoxville will be waaaay past the fall foliage viewing time. I'm probably going to the LSU game there & then but I'm making it a business trip. I've spent about four Thanksgivings in Asheville and it can be cold, yucky, and rainy.

I'd vote for Option One, the trip to Iceland.

If cold and rainy is a concern, going to Scandinavia in the fall is not the way to go

It's never actually warm in Iceland.

It's only very cold, cold, and less cold.

I think the OP's limiting feature for visiting Iceland is the ability to circumnavigate the island via automobile. I don't know when that window closes but I'd believe October wouldn't be too late.

If I were ever single over the past 20 years, I'd have already been to Iceland at least several times...

That brings up a question that maybe some of you can answer-
Will the roads be easily drivable at the end of October? If any special knowledge of winter driving is needed, I'm not sure if driving ourselves is a good idea. Anyone that's been in late October/early November remember what road conditions were like?

And thanks to everyone for the replies!

Not necessarily, it's happened that late before. Just depends on the weather and when the cold starts hitting.

Option 1 easily, especially if you aren't big drinkers. One of the bigger draws for Asheville (for me) is the breweries.

Has he ever been to a game in Knoxville? Because that's a once every what 15-20 years type of game?

Not sure how you are getting there, but unless you ball out and stay at the Biltmore in Asheville the Iceland trip expense is on a completely different level IMO.

As far as "excitement" goes I'd say #2 is much much less, but its also a very easy, economical, and relaxing trip.

As much as I love a good SEC football game, I'd take a trip to somewhere like Iceland every day and twice on Sunday over a football game.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I decided to spoil the surprise and just ask which he'd prefer. :/
He chose Iceland.

Agreed. Asheville has a cool downtown and good hiking options available, but what really made it stand out for me was the concentration of top notch breweries in one walkable area (and I'm not even including New Belgium/Sierra Nevada/others nearby).
