Best place to stay in Manhattan?

Going in June. Any certain part of Manhattan preferable to another? Any area to avoid at all costs?

No one answer to this question. Depends on your wants/needs, activity level, tourist vs local perspective, desired kind of lodging, budget, nightlife interests, etc etc

Negative ghost rider. This is really just a sightseeing trip for the kids. They picked NYC as the place they want to go next.

I tend to stay in or near neighborhoods where people actually live, like the West Village or Soho. I also base my decision primarily around eating, and those are good spots for restaurants.
I would avoid Times Square or Battery Park. Times Square is crowded, loud, packed with tourists and full of shitty restaurants. It's cool to see, at night especially, but I wouldn't stay there. Battery Park is on the southern tip of Manhattan and it takes forever to get anywhere from there.

Kids love Times Square.
The intercontinental times Square is one of my favorite hotels. The service and attention to detail there was impeccable the first time we stayed there with kids, so I like to go back when possible. It is a central location for broadway or downtown. Completely quiet.

Park Hyatt has great Chase point redemption value, usually 25k for $1k room. The Waldorf is closed. West Village is awesome.
There is a lot to choose from and lots of good options.

About 10 years ago we stayed at The Excelsior hotel on 81st. It is right across the street from the Museum of Natural History; lots of stuffed animals & dinosaur bones.
It is a block from Central Park.
But it is 4 miles or so to Times Square.
We were driving and they do not have a parking garage on site but they have, or had anyway, an arrangement with a garage a few blocks away.
Depending on what your kids want to see and do it might be a good option.

The Surrey on 20 East and 76th was very nice.
Close walk to Central Park and not a bad hike to the sightseeing areas in Times Square

I'm only assuming that your kids are the younger side, but based on these two sentences, it seems that Midtown might be your best bet.

Wow. 4 cents per point. For those not familiar, you can sign up for the Chase Ink Preferred, pay the $95 fee and get 3 free nights here ($3k value). Chase UR are where it's at. That 100k CSR sign-up bonus was amazing.

Never see this mentioned pretty much anywhere (hell, cab drivers rarely even know about it), but it's a great stealth spot - especially with kids. Not really in an area of any other hotels, but it's a neat enough hood.

Ritz Carlton Central Park, beautiful.
ETA: beautiful hotel, subway stations going right off central park, across the street from the best place to run in NY, Broadway is just southwest, MOMA, Natural History, The Met all within walking distance.

I prefer the Ritz Carlton battery park. It’s closer to Brooklyn which is cool to see.

We like to stay at the Benjamin which is diagonally across the street from the Waldorf Astoria.

We needed to be near the financial district so we ended up staying at the Hilton Millennium on Church St and it was great. Great views of the WTC, and a pretty quiet area of the city. We used the subway for most of our travel and there were numerous lines that had stops with 2 blocks of the hotel. There were several ok restaurants and bars in the area but nothing like what you would get in other areas of the city.
