Ill be doing a long weekend in or around new York City, Thursday thru Sunday. I will definitely have to be in Brooklyn for an event on the Saturday night. I really know nothing about New York so asking for advice on maybe staying somewhere in New York to take advantage of Thursday and Friday to see a few things in the city. I just figured there would be more to do and see in New York Vs Brooklyn.

Midtown is probably your best bet. It's pretty centrally located to the normal Manhattan things to see and do. If you want to be closer to Brooklyn, Tribeca, Soho, or Lower Manhattan. It's really not that difficult yo get to Brooklyn from Midtown though.

You will get a lot of responses, but Id suggest you stay somewhere close to what you are doing for the majority of the trip. If you only need to be in brooklyn for one instance, but going to be doing touristy stuff mostly, stay in Manhattan.
People will tell you to stay away from Times Square, but it really is central to all touristy things. just embrace it, you are a tourist, no reason to try to fit in as a local. But budget is crucial as well

Stay in Brooklyn. Best part of the city imo

Really no budget. Wouldn’t mind knocking out a few things like Statue of Liberty, World Trade Center, and I am sure the wife will want to do some broadway show.

The hotels at central park south, Plaza, Essex house, etc... put you in a great location to walk places and a good view of the park

Or go to Ellis Island instead. It's way more interesting, and the ferry goes right by the Statue of Liberty.

Hudson yards area in Manhattan is pretty cool. If you are looking for something a little more laid back, Park Slope in Brooklyn is a nice spot

I stayed at park central hotel a few weeks ago. Location was great between Times Square and Central Park.

It's pretty easy to get around the city. When we went in December we stayed at The Beekman Hotel in FiDi, but I've stayed in Hell's Kitchen, Upper West, and Upper East. On our next trip we're either going to stay Central Park South or SoHo (which is our favorite neighborhood).

I visit NYC a few times a year with my wife. We think we have it kind of figured out. We always stay in Union Square; almost always at the Hyatt Union Square. It's walkable to the Flatiron district and midtown and to the Village, SoHo, Chinatown, Little Italy, etc.
And there's Subway access right there in Union Square; can take the L train to Williamsburg; Union Square is centrally located to almost everything we want to do regularly which is mainly eat and shop.

I like Grand Central Hyatt. You walk into your lobby down a short corridor and can board the subway to damn near anywhere in the city

I like HGU in nomad. Walk all over the place. Times Square is also fine, great central location. Next time I may stay in soho.
ETA - grand central oyster bar is the shite

Less hustle and bustle. Less tourists. I dig the restaurants, bars, breweries, coffee shops etc. I prefer to make it my home base with the option to train into other areas of the city.

Where is the best pizza? I want to compare some of this New York style pizza to the incomparable pizza shack in Opelousas.

I have bias towards Brooklyn because my dad lives in Williamsburg, which is where I recommend you stay. It is so easy to hop on the L at Bedford and be in Manhattan within five minutes. Also, it’s an easy walk from many parts of Williamsburg to Metropolitan and Nassau (Greenpoint) — the G train will get you to plenty of places throughout Brooklyn, LIC and Queens.
Personally, I prefer Brooklyn because the hustle of Manhattan is muted — great walking, good restaurants and breweries, etc. With that said, there are plenty of pockets throughout the East and West Village that aren’t as fast-paced.
