I've noticed many of the young corporate millennials in my building are rocking backpacks instead of briefcases/bags. I didn't know this was a thing until the last year or so.

What about smaller, messenger type bags? I’m looking for something to carry on flights and store underneath the seat to access items. Only needed for inflight items such as tablet, magazines, documents, earphones, etc. Preferably canvas

Briefcases are for lawyers. Anyone carrying a laptop wants somethign they can throw over their shoulder.

ETA: Dang, they moved this thread to the Travel Board

I'll cover that in part 2. I'll have to adjust my phrasing so i don't get relegated to the Travel Board.

I hope you aren't really spending that much money on backpacks given your income level.

It's not about impressing other people, it's about taking care of yourself. That's like saying you don't want to buy nice pair of jeans because you don't care about impressing other people. You're just going to wear sweatpants everywhere.

No that's like me saying I'm gonna spend $20 on a pair of Wranglers instead of $400 on jeans that you're not supposed to wash.

To each his own, my dude. I can lead you to the stream but I can't make you drink.

I like the classic looking ones like the coach and the solid color Gurkhas. The other ones are kind of goofy looking.

I could see spending for a decent backpack but I wouldn’t want an expensive suitcase

No one IRL carries a leather backpack for travel. They're heavy, take forever to dry out if they get wet (or even damp), and even a little water makes them look spotty and tired.

Backpacks are okay as a second piece, but give me a quality roller any day. You don't kill yourself hauling everything on your back like a demented turtle....and a roller means you can buy heavier stuff along the way (wine, etc) without developing a hernia heaving that pack into an overhead luggage rack.

ETA: my daily bag is a zero messenger from Rikshaw. Made in the USA, including the fabrics, with a waterproof sailcloth between the inner & outer layers. Rikshaws are made to measure, you get exactly the colors you pick. Way lighter and more utilitarian than the try-too-hard bags in the OP.

If you're willing to go leather, look up Saddleback. Several sizes & colors to choose from.

Damn. That’s the kind of thing that somebody with a fully formed penis just would not post. Cringeworthy.

No Tumi no care

The Thread Title had potential, then Pecker had to queer it up in the OP.

What is the best Tumi backpack/work bag?

I need a new one and have been wanting a Tumi for a while.

Also, where is best place to buy a Tumi (price, service, etc)?

Love that Ghurka bro, but would never use it

I'm a Tom Bihn lifer at this point, unlike these soft Tumi bitches and their blank monogram tabs

If we’re actually talking about functional travel backpacks, the Osprey line is good quality and value.

I carry a TimBuk2 for my daily work pack. Bike with a Camelbak. Snowboard with a DaKine. Fish with a Fishpond. Camp/backpack with a Dana Designs (old school). Dayhike wtih a Mountainsmith. Yes...’I have too many backpacks.

Tumi sometimes makes it to TJ Max and Marshall’s. eBay is another good option. Repair is done by Tumi (though since Samsonit bought it, it’s not the 100% forever warranty that it once was. I broke a trolley handle a couple tears ago and it could not be repaired). After wearing out the more useful pieces of a set of Tumi, I jumped ship to ultralight Travelpro. It weighs 1/3 of the comparably sized Tumi, yet seems plenty durable. Four transatlantic hauls and it still looks brand new. Haven’t lost a wheel despite lots of cobblestones.

TimBuk2

Picked up a TimBuk2 Command backpack, a while back, after it was recommended here. It has been excellent.
