Flying in early morning to Atlanta.

Will be heading North North East to our destination, can take 19 or 85. No rush no route preferences, plenty time to roam around.

Looking for cool places to stop along they way. We love to sight see and are foodies.

Any places you've been and enjoyed?

While I tend to agree, there has to be a spot or two around there that's worth stopping at....

Where is your final destination? That could help with finding things along the way.

I'll add another vote for Ponce City Market.

If you are into ethnic food, you can't miss on Buford Highway just inside the northern part of 285. El Rey del Taco has amazing authentic Mexican. Gu’s Kitchen is as close to authentic Szechuan as you'll find in Atlanta.

Sightseeing, in town you can't go wrong with the aquarium or college football hall of fame.

1) This is the travel board, not the OT
2) Also funny coming from someone that lives in new orleans of all places

To OP: if you are considering the market idea, I personally prefer Krog St market over PCM. PCM to me seemed more for shopping or chilling out while krog market had a lot more and better food options, IMO.

Can't go wrong with either Ponce City Market or Krog Street. Not sure what you're looking for, but Krog Street has a booze store with an amazing selection and you have Superica, which is one of my favorites to eat at while in town.

Did I say New Orleans wasnt?

Atlanta has the most aggressive beggars in the United States and the downtown area is absolutely miserable.

Downtown Atl is as miserable as downtown NOLA, but some great parts to the city.

Krog/Beltline/Inman is a good area ... you could even park at Krog and walk to Ponce (20 min) or vice versa.
Plenty of eats and energy. (i have lived in both competing "shitholes" btw)

If you’re going up GA 400 (19), stop by Halcyon in Alpharetta. It’s right off the exit. Several restaurants including Gu’s for dumplings, CT Taqueria, Ocean & Acre, and Cherry St Brewpub to name a few. Also retail shops

If you take US 19 all the way up, you'll go through Dahlonega, which was Georgia's gold capital. It has a nice little square and if I remember correctly some nice little restaurants there. If you stay on 19/129 to Blairsville before taking 76 over to Hiwassee, you'll pass Vogel state park, which is nice. It has a great walking trail.

If you go up 85, your best bet is to take I-985 to US 129 toward Cleveland. If you have young kids, Cleveland is home to Babyland General Hospital (Cabbage Patch Kids). Once in Cleveland you can take highway 75 toward Helen. Helen is very touristy, but just north of there is Anna Ruby Falls.

I agree with the above posters about Ponce city market. Dahlonega is cool. If you go the Dahlonega route, check out the Atlanta Motorsport Park in Dawsonville for high speed go carts on a formula 1 style track.

I’ll offer a couple of my favorites things that are a little different than the other recs. Instead of going straight up I 85, go around I-285 to the east and go to the DeKalb County Farmers Market. It’s not polished like Ponce City. Lots of crazy ethnic foods and such. Then go hang out on the square in Decatur. Hit the Brick Store Pub if you like beer - it’s a beer lovers playground.

By the way Hiawassee is great. Got lots of family in the area. Don’t miss Bell Mountain Park there. Incredible views. Rent a pontoon and go out on Lake Chatuge. Way better than the ATL scene.

I just spent a week in downtown Atlanta. Absolutely filthy, every third person was homeless (and I say that with no exaggeration), crap in the way of food and drinks. It is way, way worse than downtown New Orleans. I’ll say that the police presence was strong.

Anyway, Krog street market is great and the belt line is a nice way to spend time.

Wife found some secluded romantic place on the water. Plans once we get there include wine and not leaving, according to her.....

If you like wine and go the Dahlonega route there are a lot of wineries in that area.

No one goes downtown for anything recreational. Huge misconception on TD.
It’s mostly Gov’t office, GSU, and for sporting events. It’s arguably not even the actual “CBD” of the city.

That’d be like someone saying you should skip New Orleans because the CBD is inundated with homeless people and has nothing going on.

OP should definitely hit Krog and walk a mile of the Beltline in either direction from there. Plenty of cool restaurants, breweries, and people watching.

Taking the route up 400 is a MUCH better drive. Don’t be tempted to save the 3 min. going up 85.
Route it through Dahlonega, you can park right off the square and walk around. Hit some ice cream at Connie’s and a beer at Dahlonega Brewery. Plenty of wineries in the area, if you’re inclined.
