So, the wife and I are contemplating that, sometime in the near future, we’ll go on a cruise ship to… somewhere, not sure yet. My preference would be an Alaskan or Mediterranean cruise.

Neither of us have ever been on a cruise before. So, the big question for those of you who have been on a cruise, is it worth the money we will have to pay for the experience? What are the pros and cons of going on a cruise? Do you recommend it or should we stay far away from a cruise ship?

If you are in favor of a cruise, what destinations would you recommend?

I would say yes, regardless of what they are currently rated.

You definitely came to the wrong place

Personally I love them. Relatively cheap decent food. Just don’t set the bar too high and enjoy

Stay away from Carnival

Alaska and med cruises are pretty expensive. That weeds out the riff raff. Enjoy

I hate cruises. Much prefer to pick a destination and fly there. Any whole day at see if boring, food is mediocre, you feel like sardines.

Curious as to which cruise ship you have been in and what port you left out of

Exactly because cruises are not a one size fits all. Carnival in the Caribbean? Pretty damned trashy. A Viking River cruise in Europe? FIrst class treatment and there are no extra costs. All food, drink and excursions are included and it's a crowd that can afford a luxurious trip.

Alaska cruise is legit. Best way to visit the state unless you have family there.

Being stuck on a boat in the middle of the ocean, with a cabin smaller than most hotel rooms and some of the most trashiest and fattest people on this planet. That does not sound appealing.

I like cruises. I have been on about 15 of them in the last 40 years.
I have been on 2 Alaskan cruises. The scenery is spectacular from the cruise ship and the ports.

Cruises are not my favorite way to see Europe because the ships do not spend enough time in port, especially at night which is when you want to experience the local dining scene. Also, sometimes the ports are quite a ways from the main destinations. Florence/Tuscany and Rome are two examples.

That said, I love being on a cruise ship.

We love cruising. All things considered, cruises are a good value for the money. We like having our hotel move from one spot to the next during the night. The main dining room is usually good or better. Specialty restaurants are excellent and not expensive. Live shows are entertaining.

What do you want to do on cruise? That will determine what line and ship you book. If you just want to get shite-faced, Carnival is your choice. We do Royal Caribbean, but the ship you pick matters for itinerary, things to do onboard, the type of guests embarked, etc. We have done Caribbean cruises, Canada/New England cruises, and Mediterranean cruises. We had a French Riviera/Italy cruise booked for August this year, but we changed that to a Caribbean one on the Wonder of the Seas for next year.

You got me. No. My reasoning above is not from direct experience. It is based on the point of view provided to me from family and friends that took voyages on Disney, carnival, and Royal Caribbean.

Cruising however is not my personal travel style. So I guess that’s most of the reason why I have not taken one.

Fair enough. I’m was in the same “boat”. I was never interested in cruises. Then I took one to Alaska. And realized that not every cruise is the same.

Cruises can be fun. Just depends on budget. Like every travel experience on earth.

I love cruises. They’re a blast and so relaxing and refreshing. The boyfriend and I are boarding Carnival’s newest ship in two weeks to head out to DR, San Juan, & St. Thomas.

The RCCL folks on here love to gripe about Carnival when they probably haven’t sailed them in over 15 years—if at all. Carnival’s newest ships on 7-8 day itineraries have fantastic, diverse crowds. Very laid back and friendly atmosphere. Included food options are amazing. Carnival also offers better, more diverse itineraries.

In the Caribbean, Carnival, RCCL, and Norwegian are all comparable these days. Princess & Celebrity offer a step up into premium cruising. I’ve been on Celebrity once and had an amazing experience.

Disney is great for families and Disney fans; they cost twice as much, but you’ll get the high quality you’d expect from Disney.

Virgin Voyages is adults only. It’s got a hip, iconoclastic vibe.

Holland America and Viking have beautiful ships, but they are geared to an older crowd (not sure about your age).

Avoid MSC. I hear nothing but complaints.

For Alaska, Princess and Celebrity are the best. Hands down.

In Europe, you’ll hit a port per day and most ports are 2-3 hours away from a major city (except a few like Barcelona, Venice, and Sicily). A river cruise is very immersive but it’s also structured and planned.

Some great You Tube channels to check out: Popular Cruising (best ship tours), Emma Cruises (budget cruising), Cruise with Ben & David (honest, thorough description of the cruising experience across many brands), La Lido Loca (cruising news), Life Well Cruised (tips for cruisers new and experienced).

Mediterranean cruise

Why? Tons of cheap airlines, high speed trains all along the Med coast, ferries all over the place, do what you want, when you want to.

Alaska, like Iceland or the Fjords of Scandinavia may be different the the Med... Maybe. A River cruise might have been on the table, but it's too easy to drive or train anything in the EU as long as you're not crossing a mountain range.

And no, I won't go on a cruise unless it's sponsored by the US Navy. Alaska may be an exception, but it's not on my top 15 list of things to do.

Lol. Why not? I bet you would have a better time onboard a Royal ship then you would on U.S.S. Neverdock.

If you don't like mass crowds, do a small ship adventure tour. Less time on boat, more time in zodiacs, kayaks and hiking.

That’s for pussies. Go to the Interior and North Slope. Drive the Dalton Highway.

Properly rated. Akin to going to Chili’s or your local Mexican restaurant for dinner and drinks with friends. The key is to chose a departure port, itinerary and ship that offers what you’re looking for.

A western Caribbean sailing out of Galveston in June on one of of Royal Caribbeans Oasis class ships is different from a western Caribbean sailing on one of Royal Caribbean’s vision class ships out of Tampa.

Both can be fun but offer different things so consider whether or not you want to fly or drive, do you want to explore the departure port before or after you’re sailing (Orlando, San Juan, Tampa, La, Boston, New York, etc), consider if you want relaxation and beach or active and scenery, etc.

The place people go wrong is thinking that all cruises are even remotely the same. They can vary like a Chevrolet, not every car is a corvette, a Tahoe or a Malibu.
