Thinking about planning a trip in the future and wondering if anyone had ever been. Interested in the Witch Trials and all the history involved in it. Have seen a lot of documentaries on YouTube and it really looks fascinating

Some friends of mine went camping in the woods up there about 20 years ago. No one has heard from them since.

Gosh, if only there were a Travel Board here!

This is just the kind of question a smart person would post there.

Drove through for a day visit.
Cute little town, a few cool tours, but that's it.
I recommend starting there and driving up the coast seeing all the lighthouses and coastal towns.

Eat in Portland Maine

Went to Boston for almost 2 weeks and took a rental to Salem for a quick trip. Didn’t do any tours or anything but stopped at several old gravesites and saw some cool markers. Some had dates, some were just old rocks with no etching

Witch Trials

Read that there were only a few trials and executions. They just blew up the legend years later for tourism purposes. Seems like it’s still working.

ETA. Looked it up. 19 people hanged over two years. Not that many but would suck if you were one of the 19 I guess.

I went there for Halloween one year drunk and dressed up like a homicidal clown. All I really remember is a wooden ship.

IRL contact with Owlie is probably best forgotten.

Yea I agree. I went later one day planning to walk around and see some of the sights in the evening. Then I got there and realized everything closed at 4pm and it was basically a bunch of fake witch shops and ghost tours.

I went to college in Boston (Cambridge actually) - I was in Salem several times as our fraternity would go up there every Halloween and "Borrow" one of their kettles to use to serve Halloween Brew at our party.....do go.....but also travel the freedom trail in Boston and look around there.....visit old graveyards in the area ....get in touch with our country's roots!!

Also I highly recommend the book "Roger Williams and the Creation of the American Soul"{ - it has a chapter that describes the withc trials and how Roger was thrown out of town in the dead of winter......enjoy your travel

Yes, but it’s a day trip...not a full trip, trip.

Salem sucks, they don't seem to care too much about the history of the witch trials. It seems to be more of the tourists or transplants that come in to make money off it.

I wouldn't waste more than a half day at best on it.

Half day at most is all you need in Salem.
It's decorated like Halloween in the summer, it's neat to see.

Like other poster said, hit the coastal towns up to Maine.
You can start with Marblehead, Gloucester, and Rockport all right by Salem.

Head up to Porstmouth New Hampshire and in to York, Ogunquit and Kennebunkport Maine for a nice day trip.
