re: Anyone ever been to Salem, MA?
Everyone who has visited seems to get the same idea that we did. My wife is an English teacher and teaches The Crucible, so we planned a stop on the way from Boston to Maine.

It was overly cheesy. There probably are some "neat" places to see, but you have to wade through a bunch of garbage to find it.

We got there early and stayed overnight. We realized pretty early on that we needed to embrace the goofy, touristy stuff and roll with it. We got tickets to a small local theater production in the evening. Turned out to be a one man show, with what appeared to be a local college girl with very few lines to add some eye candy. It was a terrible show...but we still laugh about it today.

Just know what you are getting into, and make the best of it.

re: Anyone ever been to Salem, MA?
We were in Boston this summer; daughter read "The Crucible" and wanted to go to Salem, so we took the rental car and headed north.

It's a short drive away, kind of a nice little town. We went to the Salem Witch Museum, which gives a pretty good two-part presentation on the Salem Witch trials in an old church, with dioramas and mannequins and cool lighting. Historically accurate; but leans a little to the liberal "preaching tolerance" side though. About $14.

We also saw the graveyard/memorial and a few other spots; only spent a couple of hours there in town.

Spent the rest of the day going up to New Hampshire and Maine because we had never been in those states. Some picturesque rocky seashores in Maine, but this is how they "do the beach" there:

Set up on rocks? And that freezing cold water? I'll stick with the Florida panhandle...

It is a nice little town that has really embraced the whole witch thing so yes there are overly touristy things there. With that said, it is very picturesque and has a decent dining scene. I would spend a day there and move on.

re: Anyone ever been to Salem, MA?
As many have said, I wouldn't recommend making a trip out of Salem. It's seriously just a small town with not much going on aside from a couple "ok" breweries and touristy witch stuff. And even the witch stuff isn't that big unless it's near Halloween.

I can't imagine spending more than a half a day in Salem before getting completely bored.

But this....

...is just stupid.

Maine's coastline varies wildly. We were in Kennebunkport over Labor Day and the beaches there look nothing like that. More like beautiful sand with some nice rocky views off in the distance.

Plus, give me the Maine crowds over the panhandle crowds every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

There’s a Salem witch museum that does an animatronic program that takes you through the whole story. The weird thing is that they wrap it up with a liberal spin by drawing similarities between the hysteria of the witch trials to modern stereotypes and prejudices.

Go play in the graveyards and then get out of town.

If you drive from Boston, you’ll pass through Revere, MA. You’ll see the factory where NECCO wafers candy is made. Contain your excitement.

And contain your personal belongings. Because it's Revere.

Glad I caught you in here and that I'm not going to Revere . I'm headed to concord mass for work in two weeks for a few days, anything decent out that way?

Looks like it's 45-60 min away from the city so I'm not sure if it's worth flying to BOS or renting a car and driving the 7 hours. The flights are about $500 roundtrip since the pats play at the bills on the return weekend. Also any decent golf areas that you might know of over there?

Concord is a nice town, nothing there to freak out over but you’ll enjoy yourself. I’m sorry but I don’t have a lot of insight to provide.

I haven’t played out that way but if you’re paying for the round I’ll book the tee time brother!
