I have some good places to get food lined up already but what is there to do if i want to avoid the hoards of asian tourists and fat people on scouts playing slot machines?
i may catch an overpriced show one night but i really don't want to hang on the strip the rest of the time. its depressing.

Rent a car for the day and head out to Red Rock Canyon.

I have some bad news for you, Las Vegas outside the strip is even more depressing

Rent a car, there is a Enterprise counter at the Tropicana, drive to Red Rock Canyon. Hike to the top of Turtle Head Peak. I think it was about 5 miles round trip, so it burned a few hours. From the strip, the park entrance is only about 20 mins. Or, drive the other way about 45 mins. and see Hoover Dam; it is worth seeing once.
The weather is great in Vegas this time of year, go breathe some desert air...
Vegas is whatever you want it to be. Hanging out and eating at the right places on the Strip in Vegas is not depressing.

Technically Zak Bagans' haunted museum is off of the strip and I've heard awesome things about it!

Highly recommend a Grand Canyon/Hoover Dam trip. It was the highlight of our trip there.

Super secret...not really, go to Arizona Hot Springs. It’s 4 or so miles on the other side of Hoover. It’s gorgeous down (below the damn) there.
It’s trippy, research it. Make the loop.

Or Valley of Fire. They're both nice day trips with plenty of hiking.

Sure....if you want to drive the 8-9 hour drive, it’s not near Vegas

Valley of Fire is awesome.
The Mob Museum is excellent if you like Mob history.

Make sure you get some escort pamphlets from the plethora of Mexicans on the strip also.
Then use them as tips to the costume wearers you take selfies with.

Was accosted by 2 selfie "showgirls" with their boobs spilling out at 7am as I was heading across the street for a cup of coffee. I told them it was just too early for all that.
