air travel hell

had a 10pm nonstop on breeze Richmond to MSY. We woke up this morning to an alert the flight was delayed until 1:00AM. At the time I was annoyed but what the hell we could just go get dinner and drinks and then roll over to the airport right? Except TSA closes at Richmond airport at 8:00PM…it would mean sitting at the airport 5 hours. So we canceled breeze with a refund and booked 8:00PM on American out of Newport News thru Charlotte. That flight was delayed 40 mins, no big deal as the connection in charlotte wasn’t until 11PM.
Now sitting at the gate in charlotte its after midnight, the flight is delayed until 2:00AM we won’t land in New Orleans until 3AM. The breeze flight we bailed on is delayed another hour and won’t land until almost 4AM
There is no bad weather either in Virginia, Charlotte or New Orleans

plane finally arrived at the gate. Five minutes before boarding they announce the captain has timed out and they are waiting for a relief captain. It’s 130 in the morning.
way back at midnight they announced the crew would be good to go and would not delay the flight once it got here.
frick this shite. We would have gotten a room and flown out in the morning

That sucks. Never heard of an airports TSA shutting down that early. Yes, maybe Pre, but not normal TSA. You sure there wasn't another terminal/entrance?
The above is the reason I would never take a red eye out of a non-major airport. Going to have more resources to ensure that plane gets to its destination for its morning flight out of a major.

Recently had 2 maintenance delays, a weather hold and a redirected flight just trying to get from BTR to IAH on United. Complained via the website and was given 5k miles. Do complain.

Had that on a flight from L.A. to Hawaii, plan is delayed then arrives at gate for them to announce the pilot isn't allowed to do another flight. Had to wait 4 hours for a new pilot. Wouldn't have been horrible except the entire airport was shut down due to construction and they were still honoring COVID shite.

Smooth travel is now the exception, and the rule is there will be disruption and inconvenience. Every flight is over booked, and there is always a domino effect of delays/cancelation. It's gotten much worse in the last 5 years, and I'm not sure why.

yes after a certain time there’s no bars, no food, no nothing. Just angry tired people. We finally got home about 4am this morning.
almost a 12 hour travel day just to get from Virginia to Hammond with the vast majority of that time waiting around in an airport.
We’ve taken that late breeze flight home before it’s usually quick and easy but as illustrated if anything goes wrong your options are limited. We should have taken an earlier American flight but we got cocky.
I figured the odds of two different flights on two different airlines from two different airports both being delayed 4-6 hours with no weather in either the departure or arrival city would be high, but I was wrong

I really feel (at least before COVID) airports always had one or two 24h bars or some that stayed open until midnight

If I can drive... and I don't care if it's an 18 hour drive... I'll drive instead of fly, especially if it's not a direct flight. I just can't stand being helpless and at the mercy of whatever is going on with the airlines on any given day. We also are often traveling with bikes, which makes driving more attractive.
My son just flew back from Guanaja, Honduras last Saturday. Roatan->AtL->XNA. Atlanta flight gets delayed repeatedly due to some weather in XNA, then they just cancel it altogether. All the flights for early morning the next day had booked up. He was slated to start chemotherapy on Monday for testicular cancer (all good). So I'm trying to get him a medical override to get on a plane back to XNA first thing Sunday morning. Only they say it can only be done in person in ATL at the airport. So he waits in line with the Delta "help desk" at ATL with all the other folks whose planes were cancelled. Waits for 2 hours and there's still 25 people in front of him at 2am. I was able to get him on a flight to Tulsa (90 minute drive for us vs. 25 minute to XNA) in the morning and told him just to get some sleep. He goes to lay down in airport and gets notification that he had been put onto the first flight in morning to XNA. Anyway, it worked out fine, but it was super stressful with his medical situation.

Yep. I used to be able to fly to/from a meeting in a day with relatively little disruption. Now I just mark off the whole day for air travel, take my time and try to enjoy myself.

It's a 2 hour drive to IAD from Richmond. Is there a reason you don't book tickets in/out of there? Not that IAD is a great airport, but the risk of disruption would be far lower than Richmond or Newport News, right?

Anything over 4hrs and I fly... frick driving.
I've got in/out of airports down to a science barring a delay and I only get those once every 10 flights or less. Helps to live in a city with two major hubs.

This type of thing has happened to me a few times. I would rather it happen on the way home than at the beginning so that it doesn’t screw up the first day or more of your vacation.

Got a Delta alert Sunday night while in Grand Rapids that our 5 a.m. flight was cancelled. The suggested alternatives were for Tuesday(today). We had to scramble with flight searches and ended up flying SW to New Orleans via Baltimore to then rent a car to drive home.
