I was able to get cheap South West tickets to San Francisco in February for my family of 4. Ages (15 and 13). We will be staying 5 nights. Looking for advice and tips of places to stay, eat, and things to do in the following places, that won't break the bank.
San Francisco, Carmel by the Sea, Big Sur, Yosemite NP.

In SF, leave literally nothing in your car. Nothing. Keep the doors unlocked or windows open and leave NOTHING. Not even a cup or phone charger.
Do not stay downtown or in Union Square. Its awful, full of fentanyl zombies and crime.
Stay in Nob Hill if you are staying in the city and can afford it. I'm sure others will have more and better advice.

My advice: Avoid SF entirely and stick to the countryside. Napa, Sonoma, etc.

SF is a fun trip.
We stayed at the fairmont which is pricy but good area.
Get some pizza at acquolina(parked in a paid lot and was just fine)did the Alcatraz tour. Only stayed 2 days so didn’t do a whole lot. I went to golden gate fields as well.
Carmel/big sur will be a great road trip.

Friend,
San Francisco is one of the world’s great cities. Yosemite is one of the world’s great parks. The coast south of SF to Big Sur is one of the world’s great drives.
Here are some guides that may be of use for you:
TulaneLSU’s Top 10 signs of San Francisco
TulaneLSU’s Top 10 signs of Carmel by the Sea
TulaneLSU’s Top 10 bridges of central California
TulaneLSU’s Top 10 signs of Merced, California
Somehow I have not done a Top 10 hikes of Yosemite. If you are a technical climber, El Capitan is the obvious answer. Otherwise my favorite three are Cloud’s Rest, Half Dome (registration required) and Upper Yosemite Falls. Perhaps when the time presents itself I will make a proper post on this most important subject. It is one of the world’s most beautiful places.
I had a guide to Pebble Beach, but some of the golfers became offended and had it deleted. Such a shame.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Look on travelyosemite right now for lodging options in the Valley. Stay at least a night. If during firefall, prayers.

Yosemite in Feb depends on roads being open. Much of that area will be snowed in. I visit SF relatives near Golden Gate Park and Mission Delores Park a few times a year. The GG Park is very large with several things to do. Delores is much smaller but borders on a more extensive cafe/shops neighborhood. The Stanyan Park Hotel is good, right on the GG Park.
There is no reason to rent a car in the city. Public transportation is convenient and good in the Bay Area.
For towns north of SF take a passenger ferry then uber/Lyft to points of interest. South of SF drive the Coast Highway to Monterrey. For that you need a rental car.

I cannot emphasize this enough. Do NOT rent or drive your own personal car inside the SF city limits. Cab, Uber, Bus, Tram. There is no reason to take any chances on getting your car broken into.

It’s admittedly been about a year, but I had zero issues last time I stayed in Union Square.

Yep, the search bar here is your friend. lots of great info shared recently throughout other threads. do that research first.
Specific to SF and your kids ages...I would rec to bike over to Sausalito from SF (if the weather is ok). Would be a fun trip as a fam with kids that age to make that memory of biking over the Golden Gate Bridge.
You can take the Ferry back from Sausalito with your bikes.

Point Lobos. Thank me later. $10 entry fee for your vehicle or park for free on the 1. Bring the best camera you have. The hikes are not all that strenuous. Food can be brought in but must be eaten in designated areas. It will be cold at that time of year.
Stop at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Admission is free, parking and attractions are not but it's a fun place and has one of the first wooden roller coasters in America.
Rosine's in downtown Monterey has good food and huge desserts.
Whale watching out of Monterey.

Its right near The Tenderloin and the Tenderloin has unfortunately spilled into it. Union Square is a shitshow now and many of the hotels are closing down.

You could always stay in Sausalito and take the ferry into the city and do touristy thigns. Staying over there also keeps you close to Muir woods, Point Reyes and other points. If you want to go South stay in the East Bay and take the BART or ferry into the city.

Redwoods NP. See the elk, hike Fern Canyon.

With kids that age, I'd do one day in San Francisco before I rent my car. I'd go to Alcatraz. Your kids will probably like it. I didn't expect to like it years ago either. It's a cool experience. I'd take them on a cable car, to Golden Gate park (they have segway tours that we did that were super fun, just not sure if 13 is old enough.) You could probably rent bikes as well. Walk down Lombard Street. Maybe see Chinatown. Then rent your car get out of town. There are other fun places, but you want to do other stuff as well.
Yosemite will mostly only have the valley open at that time of year. It's also possible they may require chains on your tires or sometimes, it's just to have chains in your car. I hear that people buy them at Walmart and return them if unused. I'm sure the rental car folks don't like the chains.
You could also do Muir Woods and Sausalito.

Reiterating this one more time. We were parked on a well lit main drag, in front of a popular restaurant with tons a tourist foot traffic, and had all of our windows bashed by a skaterpunk for shits and giggles.
Muir Woods is a great snippet of Red Woods close to the city.
State Bird Provisions is a favorite restaurant of mine in SF, although it has been many years.
In Big Sur, we really enjoyed staying in Yurts at Tree bones Resort, overlooking the coast. Hike McWay falls. Nepenthe for a dinner spot.
Yosemite is incredible, but deserves a few days on its own and February wouldn’t be the best time of year.
