speaking of Shenandoah we are doing that this year in July. We are leaving from Roanoke VA and plan to drive the parkway to front royal. If anyone has done that, I’m wondering if we can do that justice in one day. We have an extra night we can kill if that’s a better plan

Been a long time. We lived in Lynchburg, VA and would drive to Front Royal and meet relatives from PA, halfway. We would meet-up at a roadside picnic area and spend the afternoon visiting. We usually didn't drive the Parkway, but once or twice we did.

Easily, unless you do too many side hikes. If just pulling out at lookouts, you can do in an afternoon.

Shenandoah

We also visited in July on a long road trip that included NRG, Shenandoah, Flight 93, Cuyahoga valley, and Indiana dunes. I enjoyed Shenandoah and would like to go back during the fall. Unless you’re doing some of the longer hikes, you can do it in a day.

how many have you visited?

A lot. All the “brand name” ones and several lesser known ones.
quote:

which are your favorites?

Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton. Might have a different three if I answered this question tomorrow. Lots of great parks.
quote:

what has been your favorite hike or activity?

I haven’t done a ton of hiking in national parks, but Glacier is probably the best in the country for hiking. Several good trails and Going to the Sun road is awesome.
quote:

what parks are next on your list?

Probably will see Roosevelt National Park this spring or summer. North Dakota is one of four states that I haven’t been to at least twice, so I would like to complete a second lap at some point.
quote:

what's the park you've visited that most people haven't?

Google says Gates of the Arctic and North Cascades are the two least visited national parks. I haven’t technically been to GOTA but have driven the Dalton Highway that runs right beside it for many miles. I have been to NC and it’s very underrated. Beautiful park. Wrangell-St. Elias and Great Basin are both in the top ten (or bottom ten, I guess) and I have been to those.

Yosemite. Panorama Trail from Glacier Point to Nevada Fall and down the JMT to Clark Point. Then because no shuttles were running during Covid, back to Glacier Point. Absolutely fantastic day.
Cathedral Lakes on the first day of the season. Saw four other people the whole time.

Rocky Mountain. Sky Pond. Chasm Lake. Nymph, Dream, and Black Lakes at sunrise with my birthday with my 7 year old. A less travelled Odessa Gorge is stunning.

Wrapping up a 10 day, 3,000 mile roadtrip from Vicksburg>Big Bend>Guadalupe Mountains>Carlsbad Caverns>White Sands>El Paso>San Antonio>New Orleans>Vicksburg tomorrow. Had some great food, hiked some great hikes, stayed in some unique places (and some dumps), and met some cool people. One guy in particular that stands out I met while hiking the natural entrance into Carlsbad Caverns. He was a Canadian (from Montreal) that is trying to visit all of the US national parks and had visited 6 so far on this trip with 3 more to go. Talking with him on the way down just reinforced what we all in this thread already know, we’ve got some great parks and should not take that for granted.

Just hit 39 last week with my visit to Gateway Arch in St. Louis.
About 12 National Monuments/forests/rivers that i can remember. I sure there are more.

Hard to pick one favorite but Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Grand Canyon and Death Valley are among the top. I need to explore Yellowstone and Olympic more even though I've been to both twice.

On the agenda for May is Joshua Tree, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Pinnacles, and Sequoia NP's.

Least favorites-Congaree (it's a swamp), Hot Springs.

Any and all are better than sitting at home on your rump....

Hell yeah
y’all are my people
nothing better than an NP road trip

I’m stoked about our new river gorge/shenandoh/congaree trip in July but it’s gonna be hot, congaree will be just to check the box and hopefully not get malaria

Congaree looks a lot like MS and LA. We went during the fireflies and that was a cool experience. I enjoyed Shenandoah and would like to go back during the fall.

Lassen volcanic park in Northern California is most underrated nat’l park I’ve ever been too. (Went last summer) Tons of creeks, hikes, and beautiful lakes. Very vacant too.

Heading free in June… what’s the best way to explore Lamar? We’re planning on driving out through here on the way out on our last day, getting started early.

Harpers ferry is a national park. Only an hour from dulles airport. Town where Shenandoah river runs into Potomac. The Appalachian trail runs through it. Worth a visit. Also nearby is Gettysburg and antitum battlefields.

Technically it's a national historic park. Like national monuments and national battlefield parks, national historic parks are administered by the national park service but are not true "national parks."

It appears the NPS has put a hold on the Chisos mtn lodge renovation in Big Bend. We stayed there a month ago and it’s showing its age, but I’ve stayed in worse/more worn NPS lodges and wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. The convenience of staying in Chisos basin far outweighs any downside of the lodge itself, and if you’re doing Big Bend right you should really only be in your room to sleep.

I freaking love this thread!
Just last week I ordered a national park simple guide book where there is a picture and journal area in the book as well as a spot to put a sticker on the ones you visit.

I’ve only been to three so far that I want to count.
Smokey mountains, Denali, and Hot Springs.
I’ve set a goal to hit all of them by them by the age of 65.
I went to Yosemite a long long time ago and I barely remember it so I’m going to have to go back. As I’ve gotten older I really don’t much care for big cities any longer.
