On Monday I have a 6.5 hour flight , a three hour layover, a 12.5hour flight followed by a 2 hour layover followed by a 4 hour flight . Door to door I’m thinking 30-32 hours. Can you say sciatica?

I’ll knock myself out with something on the Dubai to NYC route . Noise canceling headphones and a window work for me. I think the first class upgrade on Emirates is about $1200 on that long portion but Im not cut that way.If I’m not suffering I don’t feel like myself.

Fly business and it’s like hanging out in a small hotel room …. I travel to SE Asia for work occasionally and the Qatar pods are dreamy. Had a 16.5 hour Doha to NYC leg in October

Premier 1k members received a certain number of international upgrades per year that they could apply to flights.

Each airline has their own thing
Delta has GUCs and RUCs (Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates
American has SWU (System Wide Upgrades)
United uses a PlusPoint system

You earn them as you reach certain levels of status, spend, etc. The reality is, there are very limited number of C space availability, so using them has been.... tough.

You can buy them on eBay but it is incredibly risky. It is against United's ToC and may result in your ticket being forfeited and the owner having their account suspended.

Movies

Yeah. Get on, get settled. Maybe read a little, have a drink. Watch a movie. Walk around. Sleep for 5 minutes. Watch another movie. Repeat. Put on another movie and by that point you're getting close enough that I can stop distracting myself from the flight.

13 hours is my record.

Melatonin
Couple whiskeys
2-3 long movies you’ve already seen (think Godfather)
4ish sitcoms episodes (Office, Cheers)
2-3 documentaries
2 kindle novels

Don’t forget a battery charger pack and two cables.

You want those options to shite your mood. Make the movies ones you are familiar with so you can zone out and sleep. Cheers or Office to break up the drama. I don’t bother with big Bose headphones, too bulky. Couple orange earplugs and some Sony earbuds. Corded. Eyemask and a dark baseball hat to pull over your eyes.

I wear a button down shirt and fleece vest for layering and extra pockets.

I feel like just about every travel thread almost needs to be broken down into those who are traveling for work on someone else's dime and those traveling for leisure on their own.

Sat on a plane , in total, close to 13 + hours yesterday. The last few hours were miserable. I’ll prepare better next time.

I’ll tell you this, if I’m crossing either pond, I’m up front or not going. Doesn’t matter who’s paying.

I can't even begin to imagine the memories I would have lost if I felt like that. I've flown first, business, premium economy and basic economy on flights to Europe, Africa, Asia, Hawaii, etc and to me, the best bang for the buck (when offered) is premium economy and that includes the longest flights I've had (LAX to Taipei, about 14 hours).

Sure, if someone else is paying first or business is the choice BUT when that choice would mean losing an entire other trip or severely slashing the budget for that trip I am taking, it isn't always worth it IMO.

Totally get it.

I haven’t missed any trips; it’s worth it to me and totally get that’s not for everyone.

My dumb arse has worked too hard not to.

First trip over seas back in 2011. Left Houston and arrived in Perth Australia 31 hours later with two stops in Moscow and Singapore.

Unfortunately, I’m that guy that melatonin and sleep aids keep me awake. And I can’t sleep in a car or plane.

I think being mentally prepared is the key. Hydrate really well. Wear comfy clothing. Bring headphones and know you will be watching several movies or reading an entire book. Download some games, etc.

Just preparing yourself mentally makes a difference IMO. I’ve had trips to Europe that felt like they went pretty quick. I also had a direct flight to Vegas one time that felt like the longest flight ever because I was thinking it was a 2 1/2 hour flight and it was a 4 hour flight.

Europe is always leisure for me. It's also always points/miles for the flights so I can fly business class.

Gained largely from business travel though, correct?

I'm fortunate that I put a lot of the company's business spend on Amex

Thats not an option for most travelers so your suggestions would be skewed and not really applicable in most situations. Not saying you're wrong but piling points from work travel gives a unique opportunity that most leisure travelers just don't have.

I’ve flown from both LA/SF to Australia a few times and that flight is like 15 hours - I’m ok till fly over Hawaii then I’m miserable because I realize how much time we have left.

Longest flight was 10 hours from London to Houston. It wasn’t a full flight so I had an entire row to myself so I was able to lounge about. I also bought like 5 different newspaper for reading material to pass the time. Overall it wasn’t a bad flight.

No. From putting business material purchases on Amex.

It wasn't a suggestion. It's what I do. I understand that most can't travel the way I do but there are those that can. The aforementioned business travelers you referenced are one group that can.
