Second weekend of march where would people here go- WA (Crystal, Snoqualmie, Alpental), Montana (Big Sky), or UT (Brighton, Solitude, Alta, and Snowbird)?

In the L48, aside from the PNW, Big Sky is the only major resort / mountain I haven’t made it to yet. That would be my choice of what you listed.

I haven’t corroborated this with any data but I heard from a buddy that lives in SLC that they weren’t getting the best snow this year. I think they’ve had a couple near record years in a row so maybe they got spoiled. Not sure.

Prime time for Big Sky but you can never go wrong with SLC, seems like Utah is getting back into the flow with some storms.

I'll be heading to the Tetons this upcoming weekend. Going to drive out to Big Sky in late March for some spring skiing likely for my last trip of the season.

I live in Utah. It hasn’t been great, well below average for this time of year. But we got 12”+ at the resorts yesterday. More to come Wednesday and Friday. So hopefully the luck is turning.

And of course I was sick all weekend

Yeah, Ive been anxiously watching this 30'+ storm come through. A few days of consistent dumping and one more big storm before we get there for Mardi Gras and I'll be happy.

The last two years in PC have been incredible, especially Snowmageddon in 2023 so I won't be greedy.

Just got back from Big Sky. Didn't get any fresh snow until lunchtime on Saturday (my last day), but it piled up pretty quick and the afternoon was solid. was skiing with my kids, so I wasn't able to do as much upper mountain stuff I would have wanted, but hit the powderseeker lift a few times and it was great with a few inches of snow.

If you are going for skiing and don't care about much else, then Big Sky is perfect, but there isn't much else going on. And the drive down to town for restaurants really sucks when a shuttle bus crashes and there is a 3 mile back up.

A few nitpicky complaints: They don't have any ski racks that hold shorter kids skis, at other places I have been there was usually one end of the racks that held shorter skis.
The lifts use automated scanner gates for lift tickets, but there were fewer scan lines than seats on the lift, so everyone would get out of order then have to get back in line, not a big deal for adults, but for kids without poles it kinda sucked.
The lift that had the best runs for my kids was closed 90% of the time we were there for maintenance, and a ski race was taking up another blue run.

I was there mid-January that year. It snowed like 6+" every day. So much fun.

Maybe a dumb question but do you guys think it will be ok to wait to find some three finger mittens when we arrive in Breck? We’ve tried to order a few different pairs and my son doesn’t like them. They either don’t fit or they’re just uncomfortable. I want to go somewhere he can try them on. Looking to spend around $50-60. Is that too low for a decent quality in town?

Good Service Here

Give these folks a call. They have always given excellent service to us. If they don't have what you want, I expect they can offer suggestions.

If you were out of Squaw then it's got to be Jones.

If I hadn't made up my mind early on that I wanted a family with kids, this is the life I would have lived.
I'm very, very jealous.
Welcome to the thread. Help us all make some good gear and destination decisions.

I'm going to try stuff on during my next trip and then buy during the discount season.
If the little guy can manage, I'd wait.
If he can't, let him get what he wants. The markup isn't THAT bad.

Sorry maybe confusing what I asked. He has nothing right now because we returned the ones he had. We can order but this will be the third set trying to find ones he likes and our trip is only 3 weeks away and I’m tired of hassling with the return process So he needs something but just want to be certain they’ll have plenty of options in Breck or should we stop somewhere in Denver. I mean, it sounds dumb as a type this out because I know Breck is a giant world class resort and they have tons of ski shops, I just don’t want to end up in a bind because I know sometimes kids stuff is limited

The problem I see in getting them on or near the mountain is two-fold.
1: you'll pay a premium
2: they are likely to be stiff and not broken in

But, to answer the question....yes, you'll easily be able to find ski gloves all over the place. From main street, mountain base to on the mountain. From my experience, nothing has beat the comfort, warmth and effectiveness of Hestra and Kinco, The difference has been cost and a variety of styles but that's it. Kinco's feel just as good and are just as warm as hestras IMO but cost a fraction of what Hestras do.

Does it need to be 3 finger?

You can find deals on Hestra lobster globes on eBay but not sure what size he would need but those are a steal if you can get them under $100.

If 3 fingers is not a requirement, I cannot recommend Kinco mittens enough. It's all me, my daughter and wife wear on the mountain and their under $50. My wife actually prefers Kincos to her Hestras which cost almost $200 on the damn mountain.

Just want to point out that our pilots managed to land us here at Redmond (RDM) in what is some of the worst visibility, snow, and wind I've ever experienced. I'm amazed we made it in and extremely thankful. Now the drive to bend and sleeping in tomorrow morning

I know thats the new rage in skiing, I just don't like them. They don;t change fast enough in the mornings and afternoons when parts of the run would be shaded and others in full sun.

Check out Shady Rays.. I had a set with 5 lenses and it lasted me three seasons before I eventually gave them to my daughter because she needed a new pair but they still work great and lesnes hold up well.

You can start with two lenses in their packages and add more if you want to and be under $150.

I wear Giro Axis Vivid with Zeiss lenses. Comes with a low light lens. They’re cylindrical but the have a spherical model called the Article Vivid. I’ve been very pleased with them.
