re: 2022 Honeymoon Adventure: Maldives, Amsterdam, Santorini, Athens

Amsterdam was always the part of the trip that made no sense. If you simply split your time between the Maldives and Greece, then you have a much better plan.

Greece never really closed as part of Covid, so I’m less worried about them shutting down as I am about The Netherlands

It certainly did. Didn't open until May 2021. Croatia was open.
But I agree, Greece will do whatever it can to stay open. Tourism is about 20/25% of their economy. Summers will be open.

That's why I'm not concerned about Greece. The rest of the world will shut down before they do.

What did you do on your honeymoon? “FOUR COUNTRIES IN TEN DAYS!!”
But what did you do? “Slept and ate.”
While I’m sure the OP isn’t dumb this is the dumbest itinerary I’ve ever seen.
That the couple will be married for a long time, and they will be able to go on future trips. So, they don't have to do it all during the Honeymoon.
After a wedding and a long flight, you want to just sit and relax. Enjoy the place. Sight see a bit.
Relocating is fine (e.g. Rome to Florence. Amesterdam to Paris)... but this usually costs you a "travel day".
Packing, travel, unpacking. You miss out on the place.
Flights and aiports make it way, way worse. Long flights are deal breakers.
If the Maldives, Amsterdam, Santorini, and Athens are the 4 places on your short list.
Pick 2.
Congrats on the wedding! I hope you picked a good one.

With Covid closures popping up daily in Europe we'll probably axe Amsterdam and spend an extra day in the Maldives before heading to Athens. Athens is only planned for an afternoon before we fly home as KLM doesn't fly to the Greek Islands.

You could fly into Athens, and take a ferry to the islands. Hydra is very close, and I think Satorini is a 3 hour ferry ride. Come back through Athens.

We've thought about trying to see a couple of islands, I've heard that the ferries can be unreliable and they don't have many alternate options. Athens to Santorini flights are only about 40 minutes and dirt cheap. I'm not sure what other islands you can fly to.

Santorini
Crete
Mykonos (another popular one)
Corfu
Rhodes
All have airports, and there are like 10 more.
Hydra is also really close to Athens.

Check out Andros. It’s about a 2 hour ferry ride out of the other port (closer to airport though). Stunningly gorgeous island with enough to do to keep somewhat busy. But if you want nightlife go somewhere like Mykonos/Santorini.

Thanks guys, I'll have to do some more research on those over the holidays

Thank you for taking the criticism so well. Happy Holidays to you!
If I were looking at an island I would go to Corsica. Half French and half Italian so you get the best of both. You can also go to the beach in the morning and ski in the afternoon. You would most definitely need to spend more than a few days there to even touch what there is to do and see.

Yeah, I'd love to go to Hydra (no vehicles on the island, so mules are used to move stuff like furniture). That's a very short ferry ride from Athens. Could be a daytrip, or you could spend a night or two.

I'd heard of this place but didn't know the name of the island, thanks!

That’s the most “Chinese tourist take a photo for social media “ itinerary I have ever seen. It actually makes me feel bad for you.

I’ll be honest, if OP doesn’t take this maniacal honeymoon trip after all this I’m going to be disappointed
Posted on 12/23/21 at 8:37 pm to cgrand
He’s going to say it was amazing on here.
But it’s going to be fricking miserable in actuality. Probably will be divorced by day 5.

I'm not sure what you expected. You came here with the whackiest itinerary any of us have ever seen. Nothing about the trip makes sense.
Posted on 12/24/21 at 2:20 pm to VABuckeye
That's fine, but Fun Bunch has been here complaining about it for 5 pages.
People saying the itenirary is crazy are making us rethink aspects of the trip and what to see and do, which was the purpose of the thread. The same person saying it's insane over and over again is adding no value whatsoever.
