If you're determined to do Santorini and the Maldives on one trip, then cut out Amsterdam. That would at least remove an out of the way stop and give you more time in Greece and the Maldives. And again, this is coming from someone who likes to move around when they travel, but it has to make logistical sense.

Here is your current flight path assuming to start/end in Dallas and don't stay in Male. Cutting out some stops would help, but it will be a lot for that time frame either way.

From To Initial

Total: 24,445 mi
Average: 1,880 mi

13 segment path:

DFW IAH 153° (SE) 150° (SE) 224 mi
IAH CMB 008° (N) 006° (N) 9,855 mi
CMB MLE 245° (SW) 247° (SW) 483 mi
MLE KDM 188° (S) 191° (S) 257 mi
KDM MLE 008° (N) 012° (N) 257 mi
MLE AUH 320° (NW) 323° (NW) 1,876 mi
AUH AMS 320° (NW) 318° (NW) 3,229 mi
AMS ATH 129° (SE) 127° (SE) 1,357 mi
ATH JTR 141° (SE) 136° (SE) 136 mi
JTR ATH 322° (NW) 317° (NW) 136 mi
ATH AMS 323° (NW) 318° (NW) 1,357 mi
AMS AUS 298° (NW) 296° (NW) 5,089 mi
AUS DFW 011° (N) 008° (N) 190 mi

Total..........................................24,445 mi

Appreciate the response and our plan for the Maldives and Santorini is just to relax. Amsterdam would be the only place where we would actually be doing a fair amount of sightseeing. Athens is just an overnight to catch our KLM flight home the next day and we'll spend the afternoon there just seeing the larger sights.

Greece and the Maldives didn't close down except at the very beginning of Covid and with their economy very heavily reliant on tourism I don't see them shutting down as quickly as a place like Amsterdam. If Amsterdam looks like it is going to be on lockdown during our trip I'll just shift the Abu Dhabi-Amsterdam flight to Abu Dhabi-Athens/Istanbul and we'll spend some more time over in that area.

The part that I am the least likely to change is the return to Austin as that's going to allow us to fly straight home and not have to clear customs and connect in a place like JFK or ATL.

While the flights are going to have the risk of changing drastically leading up to the trip due to covid I'm expecting them to be fairly locked in when we get about a month out. We both have our shots and will have boosters by the time we take the trip so aside from any local testing restrictions we should be good to go there.

I think everyone is just saying:

You are taking at least 11 flights in 10 days, some of them EXTREMELY long flights. You are traveling A LOT.

Traveling is my least favorite part of any trip. Maybe you just REALLY love being on airplanes and in airports.

I love flying, so I'll go out of my way to fly new and exciting (to me) airlines and products.

Ideally, some award availability will open up on AAdvantage and I can swap the DFW-IAH-DOH-CMB-MLE to DFW-DOH-MLE, which would cut out 2 flights, but it's hard to find award availability for 2 in business to begin with this far out so I wanted to get an itenirary booked and then I can edit later.

Also very excited to check out some of the flagship lounges for Qatar, Etihad and KLM.

I was pretty ambitious on my honeymoon, doing ANA RTW trip to Greece & Thailand in biz class, island hopping in each country. However, mine was >3 weeks, never less than 3 nights in one city and was STILL a bit too much travel for my wife, and this was pre-COVID with much more direct routing than your itinerary. Your itinerary will be miserable. Do Maldives and 1 country in Europe (Athens + island is fine), or just AMS+Greece.

We loved Oia in Santorini, Hyatt SLH has a lot of great points redemptions on honeymoon hotels in the area. Lots of cheap flights available from ATH to/from JTR can easily book closer to trip time, we did ferry to Mykonos as well which wasn't bad. In ATH we just did a cheap AirBNB based on location which was fine, enjoyed Athens more than we thought we would in a 2 day trip. Did a walking tour and a day at Parthenon and a jetlag day.

Well man, we tried.

I think you will be bumping this thread in 6 months to tell us you don't know what the hell you were thinking.

You are simply traveling too far to too many places with too many flights.

You will maybe see a lot but you won't actually enjoy anything.

Good luck, I really do hope it works out.

Thanks, this is the info I came here for!

Looks like there's a flight every hour or so between ATH-JTR so I'm not concerned about booking that until closer to the trip. This trip will be over 2 weeks with a couple of overnights on planes which may make it seem more compact than it actually is. If we end up pulling the plug on AMS we will most likely spend more time in the islands and bounce around/day trip from Santorini.

Interesting your thoughts on Athens as I had always heard it wasn't a place you wanted/needed to spend a ton of time.

Of the many trips we;ev taken the only time we thought we dd too much was our first trip to Europe where we did 5 cities/4 countries in 9 days which included 8 flights and 4 trains.

What I would do:

Find flights to Athens.

Fly to Athens. Spend a night or two.

Then pick 2-3 Islands. There are hundreds to choose from. Pick ones relatively near each other.

Couple of nights in Santorini. Couple of nights in places like Amorgos, Naxos, or Mykonos (you can take ferries to all I think).

Fly out of Santorini, Crete, or Athens.

Greece is fricking amazing. Get yourself lost in the culture.

Do Maldives the next trip.

I sense a trend here.

Maldives is the only thing that won't change, except for maybe extending our time there. The only thing she required for the honeymoon was an overwater villa.

I never said we weren't crazy.

We did Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Portugal over 2 weeks in the Summer of 2019.

Just an FYI...Crete has overwater bungalos. Stella Island Resort in Crete.

I would extend Maldives then and get rid of most of the other stuff, and find a place to fly home from that interests you for a night or two.

Any options for flying home the other way, and stopping in Asia, Australia, etc etc?

WHY??

You could spend 2 weeks in any of those places, especially Spain, Italy, and Croatia, without even coming close to scratching the surface of any of them.

I found a few options going from the states to the Maldives but nothing the other way around. OneWorld is sending most everyone through Hong Kong on Cathay and I'm not sure many places in Asia will be back open by May, certainly not Australia.

If you look into Crete/ Stella Island Resort and that interests you:

Athens --> Santorini --> Other Island --> Crete --> Home

Would be a much more enjoyable trip.

From what I gather its a really nice resort and one of only two overwater bungalos in Europe.

Granted, they are nowhere near the level of the Maldives.

I'm just saying if you're going to do the Maldives...do the Maldives. Spend your time there. Cut out Greece. Find a connecting flight to a city you like and spend 2 days there. The end.

Think we only spent 2-3 nights in Athens, including immediate nap on arrival then stumbled into restaurant that looked good. Then afternoon walking tour for history and to get lay of land then dinner/drinks based on tour guide recs. Second day did Rick Steves audiotour of Parthenon (think we bought tickets in advance for convenience but there wasn't a line) and dinner/drinks. Then onto islands. But I enjoyed the above, stayed walking distance from everything but only needed transport from the airport which was a bit of a trek. I'm sure we would've been bored with more time. Used Welcome Pickups which was convenient/reasonable and got SIM cards included for our phones which was cheap.

Santorini we enjoyed Ammoudi Fish Tavern and did a catamaran trip. Otherwise walk around, it's all charming as shite. Get a room/hotel with a sunset view (NW tip), the literal thousands of people crowding around to see the sunset from a cruise while you're in your plunge pool watching it with a drink will be jealous. Did the Vineyard which was fine. Cheap beer/ice cream at Melenio. There was an Uber style taxi app in Greece, I forget the name but came in handy the few times we needed it.

Again, do not do your current itinerary. Add Mykonos and cancel Amsterdam. If you need to connect in Taiwan or IST from MLE do that over adding another country. We enjoyed our EVA & Turkish biz class experiences. I shared your being bored in Maldives, I think splitting time there and Greece is more reasonable.

Appreciate the info on Athens and Santorini. As far as the hotel goes I found a few in Santorini with the plunge pools and that is a must.

For the flights I probably wouldn't change the routing through AUH unless I found decent availability on TK through IST if I can find a widebody. Taiwan is 3500 miles in the wrong direction so I doubt I'd even be able to force an award routing through there.

Add more time in Maldives, ditch the rest and go to Istanbul for 3-4 days. You're going to be miserably exhausted. Or just do Amsterdam/Greece portion. I did that back in 2018 and had a blast. 2 nights in AMS, 2 in ATH, and 4 in Santorini. Would've dropped a night in Athens and added to one of the others though.
