One day of skiing in at Big Sky, I think at most I waited in a lift line for a few minutes. They have a lot of the mountain open considering the amount of snow they have had, some thin spots but managable. Everything is open here as well.

We are going to Vail Feb 14-19 2021. Went Feb 2020 as well. Love that place

Me too. It’s complicated though.

Skied crystal today after it rained last night <6000ft elevation. Had low expectations and turned out pleasantly surprised especially for the 6-7k altitude plus second chair of the morning! Northway was closed so spent most of my day off Rainier Express lift skiing 3" of powder in the morning then moved over to Chair 6 when it opened. Was skiing the powder off of there as well. Lift lines got long so moved over to Green Valley (midmountain) and absolutely ate it. Caught some crust that would not let me turn and took 3 falls (1 faceplant forward) trying to get out of there
. In any case, got about 11 runs in from 8:15am-11:15am and had a great time out there.

I'm always shocked to see how low some of those valleys get outside of the heart of the Rockies.

Last day of three at Big Sky, was windy but still a good time. Seems like people sleep on Big Sky a bit, snow is a bit thin right now but for what this place offers not sure you can find a better mountain when the snow is good. Tons of terrian and you don't have to fight the crowds. Great views as well...

Yeah it's a fun drive in, once you get past Enumclaw it's pretty much all nature for the last 45 minutes

Not sure anyone is sleeping on Big Sky. It's awesome, not-cheap skiing

Alright... be honest. Which one of y’all with the LA plates was blocking the Express Lane through Idaho Springs to adjust their gear and trying to get killed?

It was a house through a rental company.
Had 8 or so guys going and cancelled on us because we "aren't a one household family".

Damn. I’ve heard some are asking about that and some aren’t.

Yeah, I mean if that's their standards then that's completely fine.
Would've just been nice if they let us know when we booked in October instead of 2 weeks before the trip.

My first season with no resort ski pass, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I've ski'd nothing but great snow in the backcountry, and my fitness is gonna be through the roof when its time to go big this spring. Looking to tackle the two highest peaks in Wyoming -- Gannett in the Wind River Range, and the Grand Teton here at home in Jackson. Gannett is a 3-5 day mission, but less technical -- just more of a slog and hoping for a weather window. The Grand involves some technical ice climbing on the way up, and multiple rappels on the way down.
Low angle blower powder this past weekend while avalanche conditions settle out. The snowpack all across the west is not in good shape. Colorado has already had three avalanche fatalities. We had a local snowmobiler pass away this past weekend as well. Everyone stay safe out there in the sidecountry and backcountry.
In order of importance:
1. Come home alive
2. Come home friends
3. Make it to the top

I can’t wait to start. I think I’m to the point where I’d rather have one good run than a full day at a resort. Unfortunately I have no gear or experience. I plan to fix that this spring and head out to some of the “ghost resorts” around Denver with a friend from from Idaho. Berthoud Pass has been jammed up every weekend so I’m been looking at FatMaps for more options and sidecountry. I might try an outfit like Silverton or Bluebird later this season.
What ski setup do use? Any communication recommendation? Santa’s bringing a Garmin Inreach but I’m wondering if there is something better.

Sucks about your cancellation. Glad its just our family this go round so we don't have to deal with that. I did have my condo cancelled about a month ago bc the owner sold it. Booked it over a year out and finding another in the same area cost me double to rebook. I went through some company called breck mountain management. Saved me tons not paying the vrbo fees. Went from like 4500 to 3400.

I'm on Fischer Hannibal Carbon 96 with G3 Zed bindings and Tecnica Zero G Tour Pro boots. A pretty damn light setup that still skis very well. The skis have impressed the hell out of me in all conditions. I almost bought the same exact ski in a 106 underfoot to give me a little more on deep days, but my pro-deal was sold out.
I just bought an Garmin InReach Mini, and I have some Rocky Talky and BCA radios for group communications. The radios are pretty clutch for communicating on the descent. I think it allows you to stay safer, as well as gives you the option to ski lines more fluidly and without stopping, but still maintaining contact with partners.
I think you have a good plan for heading out to some mellow areas and getting the feel for touring. From what I've seen, Bluebird would be a great choice to get out there. Get some tours under your belt, and once the spring time snow consolidates and becomes more predictable/stable, you could be ready to push out a little further and higher. CalTopo is also a great tool for backcountry skiing. It has slope angle shading similar to FatMap.
Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Temper is a fantastic place to start diving into snow science. He really does a great job of explaining complex subjects in terms everyone can understand. His book, Avalanche Essentials is also very good and a super quick read. It focuses more on the best practices of traveling in the backcountry -- group dynamics, dialing in systems, and decision making. I try to read through both of them at the beginning of each year.
Happy to (try to) answer any other questions.

I have the skiing ability and I think I have the stamina for a decent ascent, but I have no idea about reading snow and conditions. I don’t want to be the arse that breaks protocol.

Anyone have any recommendations on a backpack to take on the mountain? Wanting to pack some lunch and a few beers. I am tall and skinny so the smaller the better to keep weight balanced
