Eeeek...nevermind, just saw Cash's comments. Park City sucks, don't go there for Mardi Gras.

And just stay in Leadville

Leadville is a shithole town. People will try to come on here and say otherwise but they are wrong. The places they are building on the north side of town that will all be Airbnb does not negate the rest of the town and the people that live there fulltime.
I live in Denver and the only reason anyone here goes to Leadville is for the bike race or to buy a sweatshirt at Melanzana. No one here ever talks of moving there or spending a weekend there.

We did Powder Mountain outside of Ogden, UT. I took lessons there. My buddy had a great time on the more difficult slopes there while I was learning. Way cheaper than Park City.

Huge resort but not crowded at all.

Powder Mountain

Major resort with town? Park City.
Fewer crowds, less $$$, better learning? Loveland.
This close to Mardi Gras, your options are very limited and especially expensive. I would even recommend waiting until next year when you can do more planning.

I don’t understand what’s wrong with Leadville? I’ve stayed there several times and love it. The access to the mountains is some of the best in the state. Very close to the ski resorts without breaking the bank. The views by themselves are some of the most beautiful in the state.

I would never call Leadville luxurious by any means. But I love that about the town, makes it way easier to stay there & it feels like more of a real mountain town & not stupid touristy like Breck or Vail.

The history there is really interesting as well, relative to most towns in the US.

Are we using the opinions of Denverites as hard evidence of what’s best in the mountains? Most Denverites I know barely can muster up the effort to drive to Breck for apres.

Duke lives in the Leadville area so he has pretty good knowledge of the location.

Schrodinger’s Denverite, too lazy to go to the mtns while simultaneously clogging up I-70 in the mtns 9 months out of the year.

Go and enjoy Leadville but the OP should know, staying in Leadville vs Breck, Vail, CB, or any other resort town will be a much different experience.

Any idea if President's day causes the entire week to be packed at most places, or the weekend of primarily?

We may leave Lafayette on President's day or the day after.

If the weather is nice even head up to Brighton for a day for cheaper ski prices.

Great suggestion.

Snowbird, Alta, Brighton and Solitude are all just southwest of Park City and likely won't be as crowded and are cheaper than Park City/Deer Valley. They all have terrain for beginners.

You could probably find an airbnb on the eastern edge of town. It's about 10 miles to Snowbird and Alta from there.

Brighton and Solitude

These two have been an absolute bitch to get to this season with the traffic congestion and lack of busses running. Either get up there super early or wait until afternoon and go to Brighton later as they're open at night too. I've been to these about 7 times this year and I'm pretty much ready to never return.

If you want a super cheap, no frills, trip just to learn to ski you can try nordic valley. It's small and there isn't much there but it won't be crowded and is easy for beginners. Snowbasin is my favorite of the utah resorts so look into that as well

I’ve been hearing that the Cottonwoods have been a PITA so far this year. Are the slopes crowded too or is it just a lot of traffic?

What’s considered super early for SLC standards?

Slopes aren't bad if you can get there. Fire Marshall has shut the road down a few times from around 9:30-12:30. Sunday I was at the base of the canyon at 7:40 AM and didn't get to solitude until 9:00. That's only about a 13 mile drive. Parking lots are all full by 9:30. Many people park on the side of the road and walk but several cars get stuck every day and have to get towed out which makes traffic getting back down not much better. I've had to park and walk 1.5 miles up hill in the snow a couple times bc I got there too late. But to get there early enough to beat the traffic it means you'll be sitting in the parking lot for an hour waiting for the lifts to open. Saturday the road was closed from 9:30 until around 1:00 except for busses but there were people waiting at the bus station for 1-2 hours bc the drivers are understaffed. Just an all around shite show. I drove up at 1 and went to Brighton from 1 pm-8 pm. Which isn't bad because they do have like 4 lifts open at night.

Keystone is my favorite. I don’t find it to be as crowded as breck and they have night skiing on the weekend which gives you a little more bang for you buck. You can find something a couple miles away from the slopes on the shuttle route and save a ton of $.
