I used a Lenovo IdeaPad Z575 all 4 years at LSU, never gave me any trouble. It's discontinued now, so I don't know if you can find something similar without all the gimmicky "yoga" stuff.

Macbook Air from BestBuy

Wait until it goes on sale again. I just bought this same one for 799.99.

Brand doesn't matter. Specs do.

Whatever you end up deciding to buy I would suggest something that automatically backs up to a cloud. Losing class notes is a real pain

Surface pro, convert all PowerPoints to PDF minimum size, ink on them with Drawboard. I assume LSU uses the death by PowerPoint lecture method. MS office 365 comes with 1tb of cloud space, just unsync the folders as you finish the classes and they will no longer be using local storage but will be safe in the cloud.

I like this method bc I can use the very lightweight SumatraPDF to have multiple pdfs open at once on the surface and I prefer navigating PDFs better than PPs on my iPad when studying

Hook him up with a Microsoft package that includes OneDrive. Make the "documents folder" in OneDrive the auto save for all word, excel, powerpoint, etc.

Everything will always be backed up. I love OneDrive and have used it religiously. Used DropBox before that, liked it a lot too. Just wanted a ton more space.

I like my Surface Pro, but I would recommend getting an external monitor to connect to. Imo, it is very small for doing a lot of schoolwork. I got one before grad school and ended up getting a cheap $300 HP laptop to write papers and stuff.

And I would not go with a Mac, personally. Regardless of what some people will tell you, they still have compatibility issues with Microsoft Office programs.

I haven't had too many issues with my Macbook Pro 2012 and the newest version of office. I think Office runs better on microsoft platforms, but thats a given.

I also upgraded my harddrive to a SSD and upgraded the ram to 16gbs. Things been running like it was bought yesterday.

I think computers in general have all caught up to each other. It really depends on the specs, like poster posted above.

I would make sure to get a Solid State Drive (SSD) and a minimum 8gbs of Ram.

Good point. I would guess the newer versions of each are becoming more compatible as they progress. I work with a bunch of old timers who surprisingly use Macs and I couldn't tell you how often I open one of their documents on my Dell and it's allllll messed up. I started just telling them to send me .rtfs

Go with the regular Mac Book Pro or Air, 13 inch. 15 is too big for the desks during class and they don't need anything fancy

He can get software through LSU that will run on Windows, so I would suggest a windows based model. Also, check with the College for the field he is interested in. In engineering, they give a list of the minimum specs. It took a little shopping but we scored a good deal through work for my daughter's laptop. It matched the engineering dept specs.

Saw one of these at the Microsoft store in the Houston Galleria. Think you might want to upgrade the OS to the Pro version, but other than that it was slick:

Surface Laptop

Edit: nevermind, I see they don't expect to ship until 6/15

His student account at LSU comes with Office365

No need to purchase it at the store

The Surface is what I recommend.

Introduce him to MS OneNote... simply the best note taking application in the world. It is totally cloud integrated meaning you can pull notes from any device, anytime you sign in using your MS account.
