I have a 14 Pro and will probably look to get at least one more year out of it, if not two.
I'm in the same spot phone wise and my thought would be to wait if the decision was purely about the tech upgrade. My concern would be the reduction in trade-in value if I wait another cycle or two. I realize this isn't a ton of money but I don't like paying for a cell phone when I can upgrade now for "free".
Curious how or if you/anyone balances that situation.

If it's truly free, obviously do it. Like for like, a new phone will be worth more in the future than your old phone. However, if it's "free" by locking you into a multi year contract that gives you a small "discount" on your bill each month, you just need to decide what that's worth to you.

I’m in the same boat. I currently have the 13 pro max and I can trade it in and get the 256 GB 17 pro max for $3 a month.

Well true, but unless you think you'll be switching carriers in a couple of years what difference does it make? Same carrier, free phone.
ETA: It's a no brainer

Is there any catch? Seems too good to be true. I have a 13 with absolute dogshit battery life I can’t wait to get rid of

T-mobile without unlimited data is $90 a month if you have three lines. Mint is the same network at $15 a month per line (for a limited time, HALF the cost) for unlimited data. You can rinse and repeat this for every major carrier and MVNO.
But yeah, no idea why anyone would ever want to switch carriers. People with AT&T pay 3x what I do a month, but they got a free phone.

I pay $48 a month to Xfinity for unlimited but I also buy my phone unlocked.

WTF? where did I say people shouldn't switch carriers if they want? I specifically said If they are staying with them.

I always purchase an unlocked phone. Right now, and for the last 4 years, I have been with Visible and pay $25 per month. Unlimited everything, including hotspot. I don't miss Verizon, because I am on the Verizon network.

I don’t remember when Steve got seriously ill but there hasn’t been a must-have feature since the FP sensor on the 5s paired with Apple Pay.
Waterproofing the 7 was cool enough for me to upgrade but far from revolutionary.

What? No mention of the Apple event?

You don't have the option to switch if you wanted to because of the "free" phone, unless you buy the phone. But then, you've paid wildly inflated prices for as long as you had the "free" phone, only for the privilege of having to pay for it anyway. The "free" phones come with contracts for a reason.

So I upgrade every year for free. If I take your advice and buy last year's phone, I just paid 1k for a year older model. Now divide 1k by 12. and add that to your monthly bill.
Now who's paying more per month for lesser options?

Not official but what a few weeks. Better and maybe even a little cheaper
quote:
Apple is expected to debut a new version of the Apple TV in late 2025, and it is expected to include an Apple-designed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip. The new chip will allow Apple's smart home devices to work better together and synchronize data quicker, and it is expected to support Wi-Fi 7.
The next Apple TV 4K will be equipped with the A17 Pro chip that was first used in the iPhone 15 Pro. No design changes are expected.
A next-generation version of the Apple TV could also be less expensive, with Apple aiming to lower prices, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The updated Apple TV is coming before the end of the year, and in September, Bloomberg claimed that it is "coming soon."

Feels like it’s been a “next event” for like 18 months
