What are some good Microsoft Office alternatives?

Probably been already asked, I searched.
What are some good alternatives to Office? Is Google Docs or Google Sheets good for Word and Excel?
Open Office?
What experience do you have with any of these? Can any of these free ones convert a .docx Word file or.xls Excel file to be used on their formats?
TIA

nothing special. Simple documents, simple spreadsheets.

Why bother?
Microsoft has free online Office apps that are every bit as good as Google's stuff if not better. They're fine for just about everyone who doesn't need to run VBA macros, or things like having your Outlook calendar in 6 minute increments instead of the default 15 minutes. They'll even work on my Android phone.
Full Office isn't exactly expensive either if that's what you need. But if you're just looking to save a few bucks (and by that I mean $100 or so over several years) the cost of Office web apps is zero, just like Google.
Edit: If you're doing basic documents and spreadsheets it doesn't matter. Both Google and Microsoft Office web apps are free, probably it depends on what works best for your particular needs.

I would suggest the same, just go to live.com, they have web based version of Word and Excel at no cost. This is not Office 365.

Open Office is free and great.

Sure, they're fine and all but Office web apps are free too. And also (ahem) the real thing, officially supported by Microsoft with zero compatibility issues.
Open and Libre fanboys should just give it up already, they're relic platforms now.

I use libre. Probably would do the monthly office if I had a need to use it more.

I have no issues with Libre. Only one I use

WPS Office. It's free, looks almost identical to MS Office and handles all file types. I like it better than Libre Office, and I'm a Linux guy. Like Libre Office You can get WPS Office in flavors like Windows, OSX, and Linux.

Huh, hadn't heard of WPS office before. Looks interesting. I have libreoffice on my Linux machines because it comes with it. Outside of work where I have and use a copy of MS office I don't know if any of my home windows machines have an office suite, though if I did they'd be libre. Will have to give WPS a try though. Haven't heard of kingsoft, the developer, before. How do they make any money? Sell support to businesses?

I use Open Office. Works fine for what I'm doing.

These online solutions for office suites, email, etc. are never an option for me. What do you do if you want to work where there is no internet, e.g., an airplane. Yes, I know many planes have wifi these days, but not so much on regional or international flights. Plus where is the savings if you have to pay for wifi to work on your documents?

You can use Office apps offline. The docs should sync up automatically when you get back in range of your nearest free hotspot.
Another fun fact - Office apps are available on Android, still free. I don't know about Apple but think that's free too.
Still don't get the love for Open, Libre, WPS, and all the other apps that aren't Office when you can get the real thing for free.

kind of an odd thing to say considering msft has been the benchmark for office apps for more than 30 years

having said that, i like google's office apps & offering for one reason; you can tie the online data into an an android app with relative ease using something like their fusion tables editor.
not everyone builds apps but its nice to have everything work together when you do.
windows/office has a long way to go to catch up to this.

If you are so important that you need to be working on spreadsheets and documents while in the air I imagine your company or yourself can spring for Microsoft Office.
If you aren't that important (you most likely are not) just watch a fricking movie, listen to a podcast, or take a nap like a normal person on a plane.
