Verizon Announces Plans to Install Spyware on All Its Android Phones

Is this how we MAGA?

quote:
Within days of Congress repealing online privacy protections, Verizon has announced new plans to install software on customers’ devices to track what apps customers have downloaded. With this spyware, Verizon will be able to sell ads to you across the Internet based on things like which bank you use and whether you’ve downloaded a fertility app.
quote:
“collect information about your device and your use of the AppFlash services. This information includes your mobile number, device identifiers, device type and operating system, and information about the AppFlash features and services you use and your interactions with them. We also access information about the list of apps you have on your device.”
quote:
But our bigger concern is the increased attack surface an app like AppFlash creates. You can bet that with Verizon rolling this app out to such a large number of devices, hackers will be probing it for vulnerabilities, to see if they can use it as a backdoor they can break into. We sincerely hope Verizon has invested significant resources in ensuring that AppFlash is secure, because if it’s not, the damage to Americans’ cybersecurity could be disastrous.
Verizon should immediately abandon its plans to monitor its customers’ behaviors, and do what it’s paid to do: deliver quality Internet service without spying on users.

My only hope now is that it will get really bad. That these companies will cause catastrophic damage to the internet, and then the people wake up and have such a massive reaction that the landscape will ultimately be changed for the better for ever.
Who am I kidding, our politicians will continue to be bought for a surprisingly low amount of money.

I take it they don't have the access to do this on iOS?

Apple would have to sign off on it to put it on iOS.

Unless they are making obscene money that TMobile can't stay away from, I wouldn't be surprised if TMobile didn't make this a thing. They've been the one forcing consumer friendly moves in the wireless space to gain market share so I wouldn't expect them to stop now.

Developers will find ways to remove the apps, but most people don't care about rooting/modding their phones.
This could be really bad.

A Verizon Android customer will either have to root their phone or buy their phone directly from the manufacturer, i.e. Google Pixel.

Remember how much longer it took Apple to be on Verizon, that's cause Verizon wanted to put shite on iOS. Apple told them to go frick themselves. Verizon didn't give in til they started losing a ton of business to other carriers. Verizon usually just got shittier phones than any other carrier for a long time cause of this too.

Well, I'm already getting targeted ads so it's not like this is something new. Are you equally concerned about how Google, Facebook, etc. are using user data?

Looks like this is just an App that users can choose not to use. Do I like it? No. I don't think they can install it on my Pixel though. Here's a less paranoid link about AppFlash

Purchase phone directly from Google
Unlock, root, install custom ROM

Everyone should be buying somewhere other than Verizon anyway, IMO.

How many times does this bs fallacy need to be repeated?

Fortunately unlike Google, Facebook, etc., my ISP is not in the tank for the liberal progressive agenda.
Which of your ISPs? Jesus Christ, what a statement.

Plus it seems they want as much data as possible easily available for when they start rounding people up for deportations, prosecutions, etc. It will be so much more efficient. Instead of doing it the hard way of identifying a suspect and then building a case, they can just let the computers build cases non-stop, and they just have to pick up whoever the computer tells them to.

So if you are on Verizon and want a stick phone you should opt for an iPhone or a pixel straight from Google?

I use Ghostry to block trackers. I don't use gmail, google maps, etc. I don't use Facebook. I use a VPN mostly.

Or you could just not use the app. Also, according to the thread on the poli board, the app allows you to opt out of the data sharing.
