Can the tech guys still see what sites I visit if I have a VPN activated?

AFAIK only if they get whatever device you're using and check your history. Be careful about getting accidentally disconnected from the VPN and still surfing. Best to get one that recognizes you lost your VPN and won't allow you to connect. But, I'm not a techie so get a more informed professional opinion.

If the one I’m on disconnects then I assume the sites will just fail to load. So I should be fine there. Just want to make sure they don’t have a backdoor into my browser.

If you attempted to use a VPN at my place of work, I would expect you to have to update your resume.

Are you able to install VPN software (ie: admin rights) or are you using a proxy site?

Are you using the VPN on a company device or on your own device connected to the company network? I certainly would advise against the former.

They'll probably see a random IP hitting their Network and block it

Yes, if your VPN service has a DNS leak. If you Google "DNS leak" you will find many sites to test if your service is vulnerable.

You would be incorrect.

If you're using your phone then just use your cellular data.

Maybe if they allow vpns through. How do you login to the wireless? If by username and password they will know it’s you and no matter how you connect they will be able to see your ip on their network and that your device is using a VPN. Plus, get a pretty good idea where you are located in the building if they have a decent wireless controller.

We monitor for such traffic, block devices, and reprimand employees who purposefully try to circumvent our network security protocols.

You might want to check your employee handbook or IT policy. I have seen some places terminate people for such, although I think that is a little extreme.

Personal device or not, circumventing security protocols puts the entire company at risk.

This is tactically dangerous.

Yes, they can. I do this daily, all traffic hits the firewall.

If we don't recognize the IP, we are sent alerts and that IP would be blocked.

There are also firewalls that can detect and block VPN services
