Apple (AAPL.O) will have to change the connector on iPhones sold in Europe by 2024 after EU countries and lawmakers agreed on Tuesday to a single mobile charging port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras in a world first.

There are times. In this case, the set up really doesn't allow the market to make the choice. Consumer choice results in aggravation. All our(my family) cars have to have multiple cables because of it. Then, you run into the need for multiple due to the a-c vs c-c thing.

Same but I am not torn only because we all know that USB C will be surpassed at some point in the future.

When that happens, how will they circumvent this law?

I am assuming they did not somehow account for changing technologies because lawmakers never seem to think beyond next Tuesday if they even think that far ahead.

Because Type-C is simply a connector, it should have a fairly long shelf life. Type-A has been around for a quarter century and is still kicking.

Indeed, and it has been great. Still, probably my government mandate hatred won't let me like this

Again, quite torn. Very much giving me "open the gate a little!" meme vibes

I wish Apple would give them a big F U and not sell phones there for a few weeks just to mess with them. Government should not be mandating connectors on devices.

Governments tend to be petty, and Euros tend to be good with some nanny stating. I don’t think Apple would win that war

Without the mandate, I 100% agree. However, with the mandate, what incentive would companies have to spend R&D on something they can’t utilize?

The mandate is for phones. Plenty of other consumer devices in different ecosystems. Plus, again, Type C is just a connector. It’s not like they are mandating a particular cable revision. Type C is about to bump from 100w to 240w max charging capacity, and already supports USB 4.0, because again, it’s just a connector. With or without mandates, connectors tend to stick around a long time, as there tends to be little reason to change them out. For a while, they got smaller and smaller, until we reached the point that they started running into problems because of that. USB Type C is a solid middle ground on size, and has a performance ceiling that is likely decades above what we currently can use, much less need.

In short, I hate government mandates, but if you’re going to have one, USB Type C is about as good as you are going to get.

Why would this mean you need a dongle?

Apple laptops have been using USB-C for ~10 years now. It's silly that they haven't made the change to their phones

Won't this kill the trade in value for all the current iPhones? Isn't Apple going to be making portless phones sometime soon?
