Starting Sunday, cable companies can no longer ‘rent’ you the router you already own

Last year, Congress passed a law that should have fixed this ridiculous loophole as of June 20th, 2020 — and though the FCC managed to extend the deadline six months by spinning up some bullshite about how cable companies didn’t have the resources to stop charging you money, the law should take full effect tomorrow.
Do note that the actual text of the law still allows some BS to occur. If your ISP sends you a router, you’ll need to return it to avoid charges.
Frontier in particular has been notorious for charging customers $10 a month for their equipment “whether you use it or not” — the company’s words, not mine — but Frontier is clearly aware it won’t be able to do that anymore. Starting this month, the company’s equipment page has changed to remove the part where it talks about the mandatory fee. Here’s an archived copy of the site from last month if you want to compare.

Great. Now let's eliminate the practice of charging people for channels whether they watch them or not.

Talked to Frontier rep this morning and they clearly have not made that change yet. Guy went out of his way to say it's $10 no matter what when I mentioned owning my own Motorola gateway.

Sadly, all the streaming TV replacements have managed WRT that is to recreate the Cable TV package with worse UIs. OTOH, YouTube TV's cloud DVR is a game changer, and I really love the ability to use it on every device from PCs to mobile to TVs, so it's not a total lateral move. I would never go back to Cable TV, so I guess they win.

YouTube TV is $65! ATT mid tier options is $65 with 140-ish channels. Sure there are fees not accounted for. I think all the major cable providers allow streaming on PCs and mobile devices now. It is a wash for me. I don't see much difference anymore between cable and streaming TV service.
I'm looking now, have only 1 TV and hardly ever stream on my phone. Have Prime but never use the video service. Would love someone to point out a solid 3rd option.

Cord cutting blows. Quit that shite 3 years ago and have never looked back.

quote:Yep, I posted here a few years back that this was expected to happen because the content owners are the ones who force the channel bundles on the providers. They cannot sell you a particular channel without also selling the rest of the bundle.

I don't think it's all for naught, though. I've always thought that cutting the cord would be a two phase process. Switching to streaming is phase one, separating the content from the delivery platform/method. Phase two will be busting the bundles, which will be harder to do. It will take a large scale push by consumers to reject the bundle and demand a-la-carte channels/shows. This is already available to an extent, but the pricing is outrageous (like ~$40 for ONE season of ONE show). They're priced in a way to convince you that just buying a channel bundle through your TV service is a good deal.

i typically watch LSU sports and half the time thats on some weirdo ESPN/SEC Network tier that wouldn't be covered under a regular 'sports package' anyway so frick all that shite.
same with tour de france and other bicycle racing. its my guilty pleasure but you want to watch it legit and they put the screws to you to get access.

Just do free streams for sports and do on-demand streaming options otherwise. Free streams kinda suck but if you’re worried about the money then it’s worth it

quote:agreed. not optimal (esp lack of dvr/pausing) but good enough to get by esp. with PC screen mirroring to your TV.

Considering the viewers are the product it’s ridiculous we pay anything to be marketed towards and manipulated by them. You have ads, should be free that’s the new expectation for consumers and if you are not there yet as a buyer good luck in the hamster wheel.

quote:no shite. There's about 75 different "free movies and tv" apps on roku now just peppered with commercials.

Just do the same with sports and let's call it a day.
