My son just had an AV "Professional" wire his house with speakers in the ceiling.

I went into the attic and saw speakers with circuit boards exposed to the dirt and insulation. No covers over them. He asked the guy and was told it was the "standard installation" and that no one puts covers on them.

I can only imagine what they will look like in a year or two with dust and insulation covering them.

Anyone have experience with this situation?

Most in ceiling speakers are bare on the back. There are companies like Triad who make in ceiling speakers in full enclosures but they are more expensive.

Most ceiling speakers I have seen have had covers, but I don't think mounting one without one and covering it in insulation will ruin it.

A cheap cover solution is to get the thin styrofoam "baffles". You can get them for standard sizes online (5x8, 6x9, 5.25, etc)
This gives a cover and also acts as a small chamber to keep pressure on the woofer and better direct sound.

This is true.

Open in the attic is typical install practice. I've seen many a install over the years including my own that are open. Just pull the insulation away from the speakers and you are good to go.

Speakers will be fine like that. My can lights I installed are open as well. Unless the roof leaks and water gets on them, it is fine.

Thanks for all the replies.

I am going to get a roll of fiberglass insulation and cut some pieces to cover them.

The attic currently has the blown in kind.

I would do this.

build 1 cubic foot wood boxes and lay them over the speakers. Will protect the speakers and also greatly enhance their audio output.

Put a plastic tote box of the appropriate size upside down over the speaker.

You could cover it with a foil radiant barrier or insulation if your concerned about heat from the attic.

Get ready for rattles, vibration, and other annoying noises due to this.

Each speaker comes in its own cardboard box when shipped...simply invert the box over the back of the speaker in the attic and put insulation over the box. Cardboard wont rattle like the plastic will.

Would insulation increase any heat concerns from the speakers?

Mine are open and that is the norm. I also dont know that I would put any kind of enclosure around them it may alter the sound in a negative way....test one first if you must. Some speakers are made to be infinite baffle meaning they use the attic as there box...you put them in a small box and it changes how they sound. Same thing if you had that same speaker sitting on the floor in front of you...it would sound like arse until it was installed in a ceiling.

Exactly. Putting an enclosure around a speaker changes the sound characteristics of a speaker. This is something that is engineered and tested for optimal sound. You don't just cover it with a plastic tote and expect good results.
