Like the ones from the mall...Asteroids, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, etc.

Years ago I had this Mame thing and some games but it was flakey at best. Looked around and it looks like that's still how to do it, but I had no clue what I was reading.

So...can someone who's done this explain it to me like I'm 53?

What to download? Where to find games? All that stuff.

Thanks!

CoinOpsX is specifically for the AtGames Legends arcade.

BUt CoinOps is the right answer.

ArcadePunks has some releases but no support since it's not the official channel for CoinOps

Retroarch/emulationstation may be a path to persue, though for Mame type stuff there's probably better options. If youd rather spend money than time people have built arcade cabinets powered by raspberry pi or similar with arcade style controls and all.

Sorry...I'm not sure what I'm looking at there.

I kind of need a handheld run through of what it would take to accomplish this, though I understand if no one's interested in doing that.

I'd watched a few YT videos on this a while ago and was mostly lost. It was basically downloading some "shell" type thing which would run the mame roms, and then you needed to find the roms, but they couldn't tell you how or where to find them, so...yeah, not useful to someone not already versed in this stuff.

Years ago it was basically that. You had some bit of software and you basically dropped a folder full of rom games into and PRESTO you could play games within it.

These were mostly old coin op arcade games, and while I'd like to have some others those are honestly the ones I'm most interested in.

Appreciate the help!

I'm looking for a simple, cheap alternative to a full size cabinet for now. At some point I'm going to go full child and buy a cabinet with 100s of games in and speced out, but for now I'd just like to play Gyruss on my damn PC.

what do you plan on using for controls? If using something like a wired Xbox controller, then CoinOps will be truly plug and play after downloading and unzipping the package.

configuring arcade controls with a keyboard encoder is more involved. I have a bartop arcade I built with an ipac2 controller and HAPP style controls.

check out arcadepunks or check Pipmick's youtube (link to CoinOps discord on there)

Alternatively, if using a controller/gamepad, you can get a raspberri Pi and find a plug and play package and play on your TV.

Last time I just used the keyboard.

It was basically the four arrows and maybe the shift bar as jump/shoot or whatever. Super simple.

See...this is why I don't know how to do this anymore! haha It used to be as simple as downloading Mame32 (I think that's what it was) and grabbing some rom files and sticking them in a folder inside there and I'm playing Pac-Man between work crap on my computer with my keyboard.

This is the video I had watched and it seemed simple enough. Problem is, I had no clue where to get Roms from, and I guess with it being YouTube he can't say.

LINK

You familiar with this thing, and if so...where are roms located?

you're going for a high degree of difficulty with that video, setting up Launchbox frontend and finding Romsets.

You get a CoinOps distribution package (downloadable from ArcadePunks or join CoinOps discord), and everything is already built in, emulators and ROMs.

it's still that easy if that's all you want to do. Problem is some games will run on Mame2003, some on Mame2016, some on FBA, some on FinalBurn, etc so it can get complicated.

CoinOps and all this other shite you guys are mentioning are just frontends. You are still running Mame or another emulator.

If you are struggling to run Mame through a frontend or by itself. Start researching the different versions and learn to compile your own version.

My current front end is Hyperspin. Old NFL Blitz 2000 cab I bought with just a monitor, rebuilt the entire control deck.

I feel like you're so close to explaining this in a way I'll grasp!

So...do you have a link to a package from ArcadePunks that has that stuff in it? I looked at the page and couldn't make heads or tails of it.

Sorry...not trying to be difficult.

All you want to do is play old arcade games on PC via a controller?

Cant remember if Mame is like any other emulator. If it is, just use that. Go to their website and download the latest version for your PC type. Pay attention to the numbers (it'll be called Mame .209 or something with numbers).

Then just Google "Mame Romset .209" (make sure the numbers match the Mame version that you just downloaded). When you find a site that has it, download. The rom set will be in a zip file, so you'll need a free tool to unzip the file (winwar or 7-zip or whatever). Then create a folder and drop the roms in there. Name the folder whatever you want.

Then start up Mame and follow the install instructions. Once that's up, you'll have to direct Mame to the rom folder you just set up in the previous step and choose whatever game you want to play.

Have the controller plugged in. Format it. Play.

Go lookup forum arcadecontrols com

They are a great resource for figuring out what you need. I can’t remember the name of it, but if all you want is old classics. There is a really light weight front end for Mame, with a good compiled Mame version suited for all the old classic arcade games. Will try to find it when I have time to search the forum over there.

Edit: I think it was MaLa, can’t remember though. Maximus Arcade is pretty damn simple too.

I know you want to play on the PC, but the amount of classics available on Nintendo Switch is great.
