The other thread about the 5600X has of course inspired me to start poking around, but about the PSU.

I've bought SeaSonic PSUs for probably 20 years. However, what this means is that I've found the same PSU sufficient for nearly a decade of use (I currently have an RX480 and 5600X; I don't need to burn power when I play primarily 4X and Elder Scrolls/Fallout type stuff.)

My question is this: The PSU is one of the few things, that if it fails, renders you inoperable and makes you take whatever you can get to get back up and running. Fry's is gone, so the best we can hope for is 1/2/5 day delivery from Amazon/NewEgg, etc. in case of catastrophe.

When does everyone else (Josh, etc.) start keeping probably *the* core part such as a PSU as a spare, on hand?

If any part of storage fails, I have drives/SSDs all over. If the graphics die, I can move to on-board. If the water cooling setup fails, I can go a couple of days. RAM fails, just yank the failed stick(s). Mobo is a totally different issue outside the scope of the question.

I keep a stack of old boxes laying around that I scavenge from occasionally. PSU went out on one of my servers a few months ago, so I pulled one from an old machine and was back up and running within the hour.

For full disclosure, I only got into this hobby a few years ago, so a failing PSU isn’t something I’ve really had to plan for yet. With that said, when I do replace this one (RM850x), I was planning on holding onto it as a spare instead of selling it. With the way power draw on core components is tracking, I probably wouldn’t want to keep it in a future system for very long, but it would buy me plenty enough time to have Prime deliver me another one.

Eta: I just opened up the BestBuy app out of curiosity, and I could have most of the RMx line, up to 1200w, waiting for me in store tomorrow morning.

I've got a Microcenter and BestBuy within 15 mins of me. So I can get parts pretty quickly if something fails.

Does Best Buy not carry power supplies?

Oh, and I have 5 desktop computers in my house. Surely one of them can get me through.

In the early to mid 2000s it was much more common to run into a cheap power supply. The crappy capacitors would just start popping. Some would even catch on fire.

It isn't as common as it once was, and PSU manufacturers have cashed in on this fear.

As long as you're buying an ATX 3.0 spec power supply from a reputable company, you'll be fine.

I too use Seasonic over many builds I’ve only had one crap out on me and Seasonic had excellent customer service. I’ve always had a laptop so I just switched over for a couple of days.

Best Buy typically has power supplies, you can search online and see if it is “ready for pickup today” which means it’s in stock.

If you are going to use an old power supply make sure that it is large enough for your rig. Depending on your set up though I would only consider an old PSU as a temporary fix. A shitty PSU going bad can really screw up other components which gets costly quick.
