This will be for a college freshman. All he has had before was a Chromebook for HS. I know squat about specs of these things. Here are the recs from the school:

Minimum Computer Configurations:
Operating system: Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro, 64-bit (Home versions are incompatible)
Processor: Intel Core i5 8th generation or equivalent (Intel Core i7 recommended)
Memory: 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended)
Storage: 256 GB hard drive or more (solid-state drive recommended)
Video/Display: 1920 x 1080 (full HD) minimum, 12 inch or larger display
Other: Wireless networking capability, USB flash drive connection

More:

Your laptop will often go wherever you go, so think twice before purchasing a heavy laptop.
If you will be purchasing a new laptop, models starting around $550 are acceptable; purchasing a $1,500 laptop with more capabilities, such as stylus input, will not necessarily help you
SOLIDWORKS will likely be your most resource-demanding program, and it will require a Pro edition of Windows.

I know you guys often find deals, so any help would be appreciated. I have a Sam's and a Best Buy near me if that helps.

Get him a MacBook or he'll get shunned by his peers.

Seriously though, the M2 MacBook Air is a great machine. Can get the 13" for under $1,000 currently.

I bought my daughter one and it was absolutely bulletproof, she still carries it to this day it is like 8 years old.

I mentioned these and his response was: only basic white girls use those

Another excerpt from the school:

quote:

Mac computers are NOT recommended for engineering courses. If you come with an Apple, please note that your machine MUST either boot into Microsoft Windows OR be able to run a copy of Windows Pro (an additional expense) with a desktop virtualization program such as Parallels Desktop. Note that for Apple computers using an Apple Silicon processor (M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, etc.), not all Windows software is compatible even when using Parallels Desktop. Much of the required software is Windows-based. If you do have an Apple, please be aware that technical support will be limited from your instructor and the COES First-Year Engineering HelpDesk.

My kid is an Engineering freshman at LaTech also :) The best deal I found was directly from the HP.com store. HP Probook 440 G9 for $850. It meets/exceeds all min specs.

That looks like that's the right track. Check Amazon Prime today for any deals as well. Lenovo is a good brand, but several others are also good, including HP, Asus, and Dell.

I am fluent but not an expert, so take that for what it is worth. I would not hesitate to buy that one. Looks to me like an almost perfect bang for the buck that meets your needs.

You're the kind of fool I like going into sales pitches against. First rule of RFPs: read the REQUIREMENTS. Did you even read OP's post, or did you just hit reply to the topic to bless us with your FanBoi awesomeness?
