Have not worn a watch in 25 years so I don’t have any idea who makes a quality watch today or what you get for that price.
For 45 yr old.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Any idea what style of watch? There are almost unlimited combinations which suit both any wild idea you may have but also quickly lead to decision paralysis, unfortunately.
A few categories that may really help tailor it:
What face color?
Leather, rubber, or metal band?
On the face, would you prefer the date to be included?
What about extra dials inside of the original dial? Do you think they’re “cool” or “clutter?”
This is the “tech” board- are you looking for a “smart” watch or a traditional watch? There are now some “hybrid” smart/analogue watches out there.
Is the idea of atomic timekeeping cool? (Watch sets itself including date but excluding daylight savings time inside continental US, Europe at least. Maybe a bit outside of there but not available everywhere).
Do you want numbers on the watch? If so, hours, minutes, both?
Moon phases?

I’m a novice at best, but if you’re looking more “traditional” watches, go ahead and search or start a thread on the OT, because there are more aficionados over there than here usually.
In that price range, there will be a lot of attractive Seiko and Citizen offerings. Sapphire glass is preferred if you can find it. Mineral glass is ok. Movements made in japan or Switzerland are considered a bit higher quality. If going “metal” with it, titanium bands/cases are remarkably light vs their stainless counterparts.

Or if the questions are a little hard to answer, are you thinking more:

vs

Vs

Vs

Or something completely different?

Look on facebook marketplace for a divorcee, get a swiss automatic for cheap. They'll usually be selling fishing/hunting gear as well.

My first question is quartz or mechanical. Then are you looking for something more dressy or more "rugged".

I'm no watch expert but I have a few. I usually wear a Hamilton. It's my favorite.

Long Island Watch
I recommend this site. They carry many brands at different price points. Mark, the owner, started his own watch brand (Islander) several years ago and has some good-looking watches with time tested movements inside them. Personally, I have a Seiko SKX that I love.

if you're looking for a nice watch around $500, Hamilton makes great automatic or hand wind watches and has lots of American history in the brand.

the khaki king or the khaki field are good watches in that price range.

You’re getting some good suggestions and advice here in this thread. But there are some serious watch guys on the OT. Some of them may overlap in this boat sand even in this thread, but you’ll get a broader range of suggestions and more “experts” over there. Some of those guys take that shite seriously.

Don't know the difference between the two so can't answer your first question.
Dressy would be my choice.

In basic terms quartz=battery powered. The second hand will tic along with 1 tic each second.

Mechanical= a watch that runs from being wound either by hand via the watch crown or use a self-winding with an internal weight. Or they can be both.

Higher end watches typically use mechanical movements. The second hand "sweeps" across the face of the watch. Of course, you can get very deep in the different levels of sophistication and craftmanship with the movements of watches.

Sorry, I wouldn’t buy a watch for a man at all. Too much of a personal preference thing.

What if he doesn’t like what you think is cool? Does he not wear it and piss you off?

Give him a BJ and a $500 gift certificate to Best Buy or Bass Pro or Lowe’s.

Regarding quartz or mechanical since you don't know the answer unless the person you are buying it for is a watch nerd (ie they wear different watches regularly) or someone under say 30 who wears a watch that is not a smartwatch (chances are they are a budding watch nerd) get quartz, much less care and feeding and it is grab and go.

My first suggestion would be a Hamilton Jazzmaster Thinline. Many of them walk the line between dressy and casual so they are very flexible. My personal favorite in the line is the anthracite small seconds model H38411783:

It has a little art deco feel and works in just about any situation where a "rugged" or "tool" watch isn't needed. It got a little buzz recently so many of the discounters are sold out but it is available at the Hamilton site but for $545. You really should expect 25-30% off retail on most Hamiltons. If the general look interests you go to the Hamilton site search men's watches, choose quartz, then limit to the Jazzmaster line. When you find a watch you like get the model number and search it and hopefully you can find a good deal at a place like Jomashop. If you fins one at a discounter you may want to ask here or tOT if the seller is reliable.

Another one I really like for a more pure dress watch is the Junghans Max Bill Quartz it looks really good in rose gold.

It is quite thin

This is a minimalist style reminiscent of Bauhaus. The one possible negative for some people is it has a Plexiglass crystal. Plexi/acrylic crystal give a different look and a very vintage vibe and they aren't just on inexpensive watches as you will find them on certain Omega Speedmaster Pros and Tag Heuer Monacos, both of which are direct descendants of well-loved vintage watches.

There are a TON of options for quartz dressy watches under $500. One thing to do is go to Jomashop, set the price to 200-500, choose men's, dress, quartz, and pick something you think they would like. You may want to mention the brand here to make sure it isn't something that is overpriced.
