Is it a waste of money to buy a top of the line TV if you’re using Cox cable?

I’m about to replace my Samsung OLED because of a problem with the screen. Because of the limits of cable I figure any cheap 4K television will give me the same picture. Am I wrong?

Yes if you only use it for cable and no other programming

Not so. TV still matters. The “engine” or processor of the better TVs upscale the cable signal better than cheap TVs. The Sony processor is reknown for upscaling 1080p to 4K. Do your homework. It makes a big difference.

Not trying to be sarcastic, but what do you suggest as a service that will maximize the TV performance?

High end TV is totally worth it if you use Netflix, Prime Video, or any other 4k HDR streaming service.

true

it's upscaling in the sense that its accommodating the source resolution to fit your screen, but it's not going to have any substantive effect on picture quality. the "big difference" is marginal at best. I've owned all the best TVs from the best manufacturers and cable looks like shite no matter what. 1080i resolution from the cable company is going to always look like garbage. shite in, shite out.

the only real high level picture quality is going to come from streams and, for true 4k HDR content, physical media

For a movie, 1080i is 1080p.

Cable TV isn't 1080p though. It's 720p or 1080i. You can spend more money and get some help from the upscaling but it's still gonna look like shite and be a waste of a top of the line TV.

I bought a niceish Sony and was initially disappointed with the picture(AT&T TV). I then used the apps for Netflix and HBO Max searching for 4k content. It only took one episode of a David Attenborough nature show to see what I paid for.

Yes. 4K video is a hog and the higher packages offer more data.

Yes I made this mistake and I’m pissed off about it

The apps in my smart tv looks amazing

The picture on COX Cable looks like total dog shite

Considering I have cox contour, it’s a pain in the arse for me to switch my sound bar from TV to Contour

I’m very close to just getting rid of Cox all together though

I have the best apps
Hulu
Netflix
Prime
HBO max
Pluto
Tubi

That’s all I need. frick Cox Cable
