Is Fiber Still Active If Residential Power Is Out?

For the next big outage, my new portable generator will keep the freezer cold overnight, and provide power to the internet-related facilities in the house. (Specifically, the Modem and OWN in the garage.) Thus my Question: If power is off the neighborhood, will fiber still work? For reference, I have ATT Fiber and DEMCO Electric. Thanks to all!

As the years go on, the odds are less and less likely.
Many telecom companies don't design battery backup capacity for home internet systems like they used to because most people can't use the internet when power is out. They used to have to provide battery backup for power outages so that hardline phones would work, especially for emergency calls.
If you are truly planning on power outages, you need to have a plan that allows you to use wireless/cellular internet in a power outage. Cell towers will all have good backup power setups.

Depends if the ISP has power at their nodes. att would man theirs with men and generators to keep service active during storms.

I have REV and never lost internet while out of power for 5 days after IDA.

I have att fiber and only lost service for a few hours with hurricane Ida. I have a generator but the neighborhood power was out for several days.

Thanks to all. We were down 9 days post Ida. I am lucky enough to have 3 heavy duty cell towers within 5 miles, so we were not without comms. Just prepping for the upcoming season. Again, thank you all!

I pay $25 a month for a T mobile 5g hotspot to use as a back up. Its well worth the money and I put the kids devices on the Tmobile network and run all my stuff on our gigablast mesh network. They will run through some data and the cox limits are generous but not unlimited without paying an extra $50 a month.

When I lost power last hurricane my fiber (ATT) stayed active. Just had to plug ONT and modem/router into generator.

This is when Ecoflow is a good fit. I have 2 Delta mini’s and a River 2 along with 2 110w solar panels.
River 2 would go on the telco stuff
Delta mini on the fridge and whatever else we plug in, laptops, battery for the fans, phones.
When one Delta gets low I will pull it and use the second Delta and the other goes outside for solar recharge.
I actually use these batteries all the time too, when we sit outside I’ll charge my Ipad to it, use them on the pellets grills.

I never lost ATT fiber during or after Ida, in spite of losing power. Anytime I turned my UPS back on, I had internet, no exceptions. It was impressive.

Do the TMobile 5g cell towers have backups now a days? It seemed like everyone's cell services was garbage the morning after Ida in the NOLA area. It may have been folks swamping the towers though.
Wondering if TMobile 5G home internet is a good backup plan (or just good internet plan) for hurricane season?!

I had my AT&T Fiber when I ran on generator for a week after Ida.

In Orleans or Jefferson Parish? Hmmm interesting. I didn't have my generator last year to power the house but I do now.
I'm stocked on gas with STA-BIL and my G19x for the looters.

My fiber stayed lit during the 10 days without power for Ida. So with the genny I was able to be available or actually work from home most of the days to save on burning vacation days.

I'm actually now remembering why I cursed ATT right after Ida, how could I have forgotten.
Unsure where you live but our fiber lines are run from our power lines above ground. So all of our oak trees that came crashing down brought numerous lines down and well as snapping my fiber line.
So even after we got our power back, it took another 3 weeks for ATT to get out and reconnect everything.
Whew, my PTSD must've blocked that lovely memory. Ya, I think I'll pull the trigger on TMobile 5g home internet asap. I have Tmobile so it's on 30$ a month.

They didn't last summer. We're in Alabama, and got a bad line of storms that knocked power out for several hours. We had 5G/LTE phones, and had no data. Realized after a while that our daughter's old iPhone was an LTE/3G phone and she was getting 3G data, so I was able to log in to Alabama Power's outage website to see when to expect it to be back on. They give decent estimates, and if it was going to go into the night I was going to go hang out with family until it came back on.

this is why i still have physical media.
Sometimes youve got to pass time when shits not working or you are just running off a gen.
