Is $1,000 for a phone that ridiculous?

Feels like there are a ton of folks out there that refuse to buy the iPhone X purely because it breaks that $1,000 threshold.
Just saying, there probably isn't one thing you use more in life than your phone... is 1k that insane of a price?

Not even close
They're powerful computational devices that fit in your pocket. You pay the premium for its size
Edit: It's the same reason why laptops and ultrabooks are so much more expensive then their desktop counterpart

In my opinion, yes, by a lot. Disclaimer: I'm cheap to begin with
If my phone was vital to my ability to make money I'd consider spending more. But, if I can get a phone for 250 and build a pc for $750 I'd rather spend my money that way. Besides, 2 weekends sitting in front of the pc doing side work pays for both of them.
Personally I just don't see the need or point of spending that much on a phone.
ETA:
What am I missing out on with my "cheap" phone?

Hell you can get a Galaxy S7 edge on swappa for $250. What the hell can a $1000 phone do that it cant?
Its 100% status symbol.

Warranty and support. Which a budget or swappa phone may or may not have.
For myself, I keep my phones 3-4 years, so buying the best phone (Whatever it may be) for myself makes sense. Though I'm still rocking the iPhone 6 Plus that I bought brand new.

The devices being sold for $1k are probably accurately priced for what they are. The fact that some are selling is evidence that people will buy them.
What's ridiculous to me is the fact that companies are building and people are buying these $1k phones. It is absolutely, 100%, ridiculously unnecessary.

I don't think it that's much for how much I use it. It's a relative bargain.
A nice notebook computer costs that much and hardly anyone uses them at home these days.

As a proud iPhone X owner, the only people crying about the price are poor people

My daughter went to the Apple Store the other day and bought an iPhone 7 Plus for $830. That's just ludicrous to me.

$1,000 but has a life of about 18 months, I think that's why you're seeing push back

The whole point of it all is innovation though. Everyone wants the things they own to be able to do the most.
If phones were only for calling and everyone felt that way about everything, cars would all only cost $10,000 and would only get you from point A to point B. Instead, you pay a premium and get lane assist, dvd players, handsfree calling, etc.
It's basically 1,000 for a phone, camera, computer, and personal assistant

I just think that we're conditioned to think that these phones aren't actually supercomputers because of all of those years of a "free" phone with a 2-year contract. Now that we actually are paying for the phones, people don't see it that way anymore.

$1k isn’t ridiculous. But the iPhone X is. I’m one to upgrade every two years, and I’m stuck on the 6+, so I decided to ordered one yesterday. I got to checkout and the final tally was $1,452 without the quick charge or wireless charger, or the prophylactic AppleCare protector ...I just couldn’t pull the trigger.
I just got a new iPad Pro with apple care and it was nearly same price. I started thinking, and the phone is 2/3 of what it would cost me to replace my 6 year old MacBook.
For the first time, I just couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger ...but in fairness of full disclosure, everything I own is Apple, and it’s unlikely that I’ll be able to hold out long term.
