I use Macs at home and am a big Linux guy at work, but I have zero issues saying that Windows 10 is a good operating system. It's especially great for business work stations and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one to home users. Windows 10 is rock solid and the upgrade from 7 to 10 is very easy.
I've made the mistake in the past of setting people up with Ubuntu or Mint. You basically are on the hook to be their tech support/linux administrator long-term. You'd be surprised at the edge cases that end-users will un-Earth.
With Windows 10 I have a powershell script to strip out a lot of the extra crap. Then I clean up the start menu so it is organized and only has the things they need on it. Unpin everything but file explorer, chrome, and frequently used apps from the task bar, etc.

Well that’s my point. The start menu was DESIGNED to be open.
The Start Menu has gotten progressively cluttered and less useful. However, I think Windows wants you to use Cortana more, either by searching for the app you want or with voice commands. It's surprisingly not a bad experience. Usually I can click the search bar (or hit the Windows key), type 2-3 characters of the name of the app I want, and hit return to launch the app I want. pretty quick and low friction.

You can try running Linux off of a USB stick before installing it to see if you like it.
Good call. Doing that right now.

With the menu closed they both look elegant, and I rarely open the menu since I pin all my common programs to the taskbar.
Same here and you can remove all that bloatware with a few Powershell scripts (and if you want to get really fancy you can remove them from the default profile so that no profiles created will contain them).

Well...I found an old laptop and installed Linux Mint.
Only hitch was I couldn't get the update manager work in ng because it wouldn't connect to wifi. Turned out I needed to download a new driver. Plugged directly into the router and boom!
Working great and does everything I need it to do. My Win 7 laptop is now for games and storing pictures/videos.

What's a Powershell script?

next to this elegance:
The MacOS version of the Start Menu, the Go Menu, has the elegance of a grocery list. Without the pretty wallpaper Mojave looks a lot like System 1.1 from 1984.

something that's a lot easier to run that figuring out how to install from a DMG or figure out Mac's scripting/macro language.

So I gotta run a Powershell script just to clean up my computer?

See. If it ain't broke don't fix it. A lesson Bill Gates should a learned several decades ago...

I can't remember the last time I've opened the start menu to use it
It's windows button on the kb->search for the program or file I need
No shortcuts on the desktop, and only chrome, file explorer, steam and discord on the taskbar

Windows 10 works well for our family and is compatible with all of the software we enjoy.

That apple screen has no words. Just symbols or icons. To me it's color coded kid crap.
That's not simple. It is the most user unfriendly thing I would ever want to try to work with. Because I did try. No way to do anything useful on that toy.

Oh sweet irony, Gates fixed the Mac problem several decades ago by releasing Windows. Apple's "it ain't broke" delusion is why they only have 10% of the desktop market today.

Uh, no it isn't.
I just did a fresh install of windows 10 on my machine after swapping motherboards.
Only "debloating" that needs to be done is removing the default taskbar shortcuts and downloading chrome
