Can you just upgrade to 10 or do you have to do a full disk clean and do a clean install of windows 10?

If you have a legit key, you can upgrade with the media creation tool without any problems

i mean there was a time when Mocrosft was giving Windows 10 for free to anyone with windows 7

You can do the upgrade, it just takes a while (depending on computer and connection).
Unless there are programs on there you absolutely can't lose (or just have too many to want to deal with reinstalling them) then I would recommend backing up your pertinent data (most of it will be in C:\users\yourprofilename then:
Desktop
Favorites
Documents
Pictures
Videos
Music
Downloads
If you have Dropbox there will be a Dropbox folder you can back up as well (for files you got through Dropbox but may no longer be available).
Some folks also will create folders in C:\, if you're one who has done this then remember to back those up as well.
This should account for most, if not all, of your data (a few older programs will put things in odd places, like Irfanview or older versions of Outlook with their pst's).

The link to upgrade to windows 10 for free on the microsoft website is still active. I just did this last week on an old computer.

I don't really like Windows 10 and I don't want to waste money on a new computer when I don't do anything fancy.
I'm thinking about partitioning the hard drive and installing Linux. Anyone here done that, and if so, are there any pitfalls?

That's exactly how I acclimated my wife to Linux. Told her to spend some time every day in the Linux side doing her day-to-day stuff. She liked it because it was significantly quicker than Windows. No pitfalls that I ran into and worst case, blow away the partition and start again. There are many good Linux distros but a good place to start is Mint (www.linuxmint.com )

I can only find the $139 option. Where did you find it free on their website? TIA

If you have a valid Win7 key, you can activate Win10 with it. I just did this a few weeks ago on a Win10 VM on my Mac since my old Win7 PC is no longer a viable option.

You can try running Linux off of a USB stick before installing it to see if you like it.

What don't you like about it? Win10 is the best OS to-date, bar none IMO. I will never go back to OSX, and I don't care enough to put in the extra effort to set up Linux.
Maybe the times you've used it, it just wasn't set up correctly.

The next best move is to install Linux
Download Linux Mint 19.3 - Cinnamon Desktop - 64 bit
No real pitfalls, occasionally if you're trying to set up a dual boot system there can be but that is true of any dual boot system not just Linux. It's fast, bug free, and gets frequent updates.
If you do decide to go with Windows 10, you should read this article and do what it tells you to...
Windows 10 Is Spying On You, But There's A Way Out
"Microsoft’s new service agreement consists of about 12,000 words, which clearly states that the operating system will be invading your privacy like never before and if you haven’t read that then it’s not your mistake, we hardly read TOS anyway.
So the Microsoft’s new service agreement states that,
“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to.”
Microsoft does, however, also gives you an option to opt-out of features that you think may be invading your privacy, but remember if you have installed Windows 10 you have opted-in for all features by default..."
With Windows 10, Microsoft decided to follow Google down the road of software as surveillance tool for profit.

This horrid mess? Looks like it was designed by a 10th grader...
next to this elegance:

Funny how you display Windows with the Start Menu open.
With the menu closed they both look elegant, and I rarely open the menu since I pin all my common programs to the taskbar.
