I cant stand these subset skills that alexa and Google Home use (called actions i believe on GH).

Just have it work by saying Alexa or Ok Google. I should not have to tell the device to access a particular skill first.

Got a Dot today. Was expecting it to be able to control my Fire Tv. It doesn't. WTF?

couldn't you accomplish both things with a $10 clock-radio?

Well considering a Dot is only $40 and can play music from a variety of sources, then it is well worth it just for those things.

I use mine as a clock, to give me weather updates, to tell me about traffic before I commute to work, to control my security system, door locks, Nest, lights, entertainment system via Harmony. When listening to music in my bedroom, I can link it to the Bluetooth sound bar.

It can tell you how to mix drinks. if you like something being cooked on Food Network it can send you the recipe. You and anyone else can add to shopping lists which it makes it convenient. Dot can check my banking and credit card accounts for me. You can order pizza and an Uber from it. It makes funny farting sounds when you ask for a fart.

It just depends what you want to use it for.

bump as i edited OP.

giving it another shot now that wink added locks to it

it seems my lights are actually responding faster to it than they do when i use the wink app. the GE link bulbs are off before alexa says 'ok done'

Just wait until she tells you "sorry, Ive found more than one device with that name..." ex. I name the lock on my bedroom door "bedroom". the light is also called "bedroom". no, alexa I do not want to dim the lock to 25%

yep, that was one of the reasons i threw it in the drawer the first time.

9 out of 10 times thats the response i would get.

"alexa, why don't you give me a list of these duplicate devices and let me pick the right one you fricking bitch?"

Rename them in the Wink app and it'll solve all your problems. At least it did for me.

i have 'island' as a group.
i have 'island 1, island 2, island 3, island 4' as individual lights

it refuses to work with any of them so i'm guessing they cant start with the same name either.

still figuring stuff out...

I had issues with the Alexa when I tried it. Google home has worked better so far. I'm sure I haven't set up Alexa enough though.

I like having the ability to use my phone as well with home.

I did like the alarm. Com skill. I could lock the door then. I'll have to do some voodoo with ifttt and tasker to get it to work with home and smartthings

Love this thread. Called out CAD for an Air Compressor Thread and threw this one in his face. Forcing him to come back and update it.

Just ordered a dot since I was given a gift card. Do I need speakers for it to play music or will it play music from the device? Also, my home isn't a smart home, I've bought a couple of outlet fixtures and that has been it. Will the dot be a waste?

My wife had to have one of these things. I kept questioning why because it looked pointless to me. I gave in and bought her one for Christmas, because she wanted it. 2 months later, it sits on the island and does absolutely nothing.
She uses it to play music for the dog when we leave the house, only because I asked her to stop leaving the TV on for the dog. It's pointless to leave $7k+ of AV equipment playing for a dog that doesn't give 2 shits.

Weird. Mine plays damn near any song I ask it to, or radio station.

The todo and shopping list is pretty handy as it shows up on your phone. "Alexa add meat and beer to shopping list"

Or things like simple kitchen math without pulling out the calculator.

Pretty neat device... I like it.

Love being able to ask it the weather in the morning, and then ask it what's going on in the world, and then telling it to tune to ESPN Radio in Baton Rouge to listen to 104.5's morning show.

Sets timers for the grill, streams to my Bluetooth Shower Speaker, Bose Sound Link, or even my BT capable sound bar and wireless sub in my living room. Also controls my camera system at home is controlled and toggled all with my voice.

Really don't understand how people don't see the use case for hands free info and voice-control assistant around the house.

i cant get dot to connect to google music or pandora. that renders its ability to play music useless to me.

how exactly does your dot communicate with a soundbar? i can connect to my soundbar directly with my phone using bluetooth but i dont see how alexa would do that.

In the Alexa app you go to settings and then click on the Dot in the device list and you'll see the bluetooth setting.

One thing I absolutely hate about the BT function is that it continues to output the audio to BT even when it's not connected to a device.

it's not compatible with google play music (the whole reason you should own a google home over a dot/echo if you use GPM). I can't answer why it wont connect with pandora though.
