You can. But only with google chromecast. I just don't use our chromecast that much when streaming.
So instead i have to say Watch Netflix. We have multiple profiles on Netflix in our house so that screen comes up first. Then i have to say select. Then it launches into your personal Netflix. Then you have to tell it to scroll left, right, up, down, select on your show.
All of those are individual commands. So while its possible it's not really practical at the moment. Again maybe once GH and harmony are supported that can be cleaned up.

It's a lot less clunky with DTV as it is with the smart app portion of our tv (for us roku).
With directv its really easy to tell it to go to a particular channel, turn the volume up and down, previous channel, record. Basically anything you want to do with a remote.
But if you want to channel surf, or scroll through the guide then yeah its probably worth grabbing the remote.

me either. i use the built-in netflix on the vizio since there's a button for it and don't have a chromecast on our main tv (shocker) but use fireTV instead since its 4K and runs kodi.

Book 1984- within 5 years Alexa is going to be telling you to do your exercises

Echo Dot the most useless contraption ever invented? It is at CAD's house
And if it was made by anyone besides Amazon you would be singing it's praises.

There are 4000 skills that Alexa can do. I can even start my damn car with the thing. If you have any smart devices in your house you can make them voice enabled. I can control my lights(Hue)/thermostats(Nest)/Garage Door/etc all with my voice. I have Pandora and Spotify so I can also play any music I want. With all of my IFTTT triggers setup I can say one voice command and have my tv turn off, turn lights off and close garage door all without having to touch anything.
Spend a little time researching the skills and I am sure you will find that it can do all kinds of cool stuff.

That's not their aim at all, they're going to tell you to "be sure to drink your Ovaltine." Someone found a help wanted ad Amazon was running for maids that would basically clean your house and try and see what stuff they could sell you

It's a really dumb piece of shite. My in-laws got one. My wife and I agreed after we left their place that we'd never get one.

Screw that, Alexa is awesome. We got one for Christmas too. Set it up on New Years Eve.
One of the first questions I asked was "Surely you can't be serious?", and she responded "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley". I was sold.
Also, when I was a few bottles of wine deep and my wife had gone to bed, it was just me and Alexa hanging out (what an exciting new years
).
In reality, it has minimal uses. Like instead of whipping out my phone to look up random trivia, now I just ask it out lout. Or I check the weather without pulling my phone out of my pocket. Ordering paper towels and stuff is "easier" too. It was free (gift), costs me nothing to operate, and is a novelty that doesn't take up much space and hooks up to my stereo system to play Pandora.

cad has cracked versions of spotify and pandora (spare me the moral judgements)
How did you accomplish this?

Posted on 1/4/17 at 3:30 pm to CAD703X
Works great for me. I ask for music. It plays. I ask it for alarm in the morning. It wakes me up. Does all I need it to do.

couldn't you accomplish both things with a $10 clock-radio?
Posted on 1/4/17 at 3:38 pm to CAD703X
i use my echo mainly for a voice activated alarm clock. Even does voice command 10 minute snoozes.

Son bought me one for Christmas. I love it. But I do have a prime account.
Prime Music is fast. I can ask Alexa to play a specific song and within 5 seconds the song is playing. It is also incredible to change the volume without having to fidget with a remote.
I added skills for our thermostat, wife's fitbit, cellphone finder, and linked pandora

Because I can. I can tell it to start the car and set the internal temperature. It's really helpful when it's cold outside.

I have gotten both an Echo and Dot gifted to me since October.
I put the portable battery to make the Echo wireless. This is what I use it for:
* Flash Briefing in the AM: Weather Report, Traffic, Top News, Local News, etc. All divided into little snippets. Helps me organize my day.
* Playing Spotify playlists in the kitchen & bathroom as my surround is not in those rooms and when I don't feel like playing vinyl overhead. Speaker is really good in the Echo. We use this feature a lot.
* Timers in the kitchen / Alarms / etc.
So far the Dot is on my bedside and is used for:
* Sleep Sounds & White Noise
* Alarm Clock
That's about it. I don't order consumables on Amazon so I am not using that feature. It seems very easy to tie in smart devices, if I had more light bulbs etc to make it worthwhile that would be a cool feature to voice activate (ceiling fan, lights, etc).
Neither device is a game changer, but the wireless Echo gets used daily in place of a bluetooth speaker / phone combo.
