I don't have a Facebook account, so it's a no go for me.

Oh,didn't know that. I use WhatsApp mostly. Genuinely curious to see what the landscape looks like if Facebook ever completes the merger of WhatsApp, messenger, and Instagram messaging.
I think that could be a major shift that begins to take away from iMessage.
I was reading an article recently on the death of blackberry, and one of the main points was they waited to long to open blackberry messages to other systems. Talked about how big the service was at its peak, and they could've been the messaging system if they had recognized the changing landscape and opened the service to all. It was interesting as there were several parallels to apple

interesting.
Instagram just developed an app called "threads" too which is a direct Snapchat competitor
Zuckerberg know what he is doing. I'd trust him moving fwd moreso than apple that is for certain

In what world would a sane person trust Zuckerberg over Tim Cook?

You are easily amused, it’s a garbage buggy app that had no reason to be split from the main app and to block using messaging in other mobile ways.
It’s purpose to exist is a more elaborate tracking method on your messages, otherwise there is no reason to block every other method on mobile platforms.
I did like Paper, shame no one used it and it went away.

The problem is how does Apple sell an app to a market that wants everything for free?
Posted on 10/7/19 at 5:54 pm to TigerGman
In app advertising is how alot of the free messaging apps on Android do it.
But I don't see apple doing that.
I have faith that apple could do it though. I just believe that having a fragmented messaging system is not sustainable forever. At some point the US is going to do like the rest of the world and find a universal solution.

They did it on purpose, they purposely locked down all the other ways you can use messaging on mobile devices. You can bypass it in browser apps by just doing request desktop version though, it still works in the mobile format of the website. They just want to force that shite arse app on people.

If carriers do RCS here, a lot of the features that people want in iMessage for blue bubbles, should work for green bubbles too. No reason unless they purposely restrict it. That would be a shitty move. Everyone should be able to use their native messaging app at that point.

I don't know anyone who uses swipe. I guess it would be ok for short, simple messages. I thought it was of those features they include as marketing fluff like cell phone pockets in cargo pants.

I keep hoping that RCS is the future, and then you never see any progress from the carriers... When they finally do announce something it is for like one old phone, and it's not interconnected with other carriers
The carriers are so focused on 5g, but honestly, universal RCS would benefits the average user much more than 5g.
If Google takes control, I am afraid that apple will resist. If the carriers implement RCS apple will eventually have to adopt it as the get rid of sms.
It's all so frustrating that it is 2019 and we are pretty much the last country on Earth without a universal data based messaging system

what?

do you still have to hold your phone with 2 hands to reply to a message?
honestly i am so confused by this thread. i just assumed we moved away from neanderthal two-handed hunt-and-peck texting years ago.
i can't believe how many people are still using 2 thumbs to text.

The vast majority of the time I text, I have a full-sized keyboard on a Mac with iMessage in front of me.
While I'm on the go, I'm not really interested in having any text conversations. I used to do that kind of stuff long ago but I've committed to living in the moment and minimizing phone use. Two-thumbed typing will always be faster than single-thumb typing, even with swipe keyboards.... so I give my phone my undivided, two-handed attention for a quick moment to fire off a fast text and then I move on to a different activity. For my own sanity, I don't need to ever be using my phone one-handed very often.

I wouldn’t call it hunt and peck because if you know how to type you aren’t looking at the keyboard to hunt for anything. It’s just two thumb standard typing.

If we are getting back on topic, I have never gotten used to swipe. I usually talk to text more than anything. Not in public of course
