how hard is it to get replacement parts for? the similar Blade quad is going to have better parts availability and support most likely.

Those things look fun to play with but how easily do they break?

I want one for work to monitor my team without having to get up from my desk. I could attach a small intercom system to it so I can yell at them too.

Buy it for....? Unless you have a commercial enterprise setup for it's use I'd stay away. It will get old pretty quickly.

First off don't buy the vision! If you are going to get a drone I would say go with the DJI Phantom 2 with the H3-3D gimbal that carries a go pro! The range on the vision 2 isn't going to be as good as if you put your own First Person View transmitter on the Phantom 2.

Parts are extremely easy to come by, DJI has been great about keeping up with production needs.

These drones are made to be easy to handle, they have GPS hold and autopilot that keeps them in place and very stable. Unless you are flying recklessly and treating them like a tank then you should be fine.

We are using two of the Phantom 2's this year for LSU and so far the videos speak for themselves.

My brother has the Phantom 2 Vision+ with the 3-axis Camera Stabilization Gimbal. Worth the extra $300.

He owns a security camera installation/sales company and offers fly-over footage to clients who want it. Until FAA regulations are in place next year, he technically cannot charge for it, so it's a shiny-pretty "free" perk.

If you're buying it as a toy though, that's one expensive toy.

Probably the best ready-to-fly quad. It will do exactly what you want, and if you're able to pay the price for convenience it's one of the best.

Just make sure you look up the rules in your area for flight ceiling/etc. The relevant fines are in the 5 digit range.

Can't imagine a Phantom 2 owner would have his home go into foreclosure. At least not before selling the drone for a mortgage payment.

That would be smart. You would be surprised the shite people leave that could have helped them make some mortgage payments.

I have a house my guys are cleaning out next week with an easy $10K worth of stuff in the shop alone.

Personally I don't care for DJI. I've been in the multirotor hobby for about a year and built 3 of my own. If you can solder and are a nerd like me I highly recommend building one as it's a lot of fun. If you're just looking for ready to fly then I suggest 3DRobotics. Regardless of who you buy from PLEASE be smart about when, where, and how you fly it. Don't fly above 400', within 5 miles of an airport, and don't fly it over people or cars. These things can be highly unreliable and are made from very cheap Chinese parts. If one thing fails they drop like rocks.

Some places I don't think this is possible. The entire city of LC for example is within 5 miles of either LCH or Chennault.

5 Deep, what copters have you built? I am looking into building a larger setup to fly something bigger than a go pro and I am looking for suggestions.

I've built at 900 sized quad with 17" props on 3s so not much lifting power just long run times. 450 size 3s setup and now I'm currently on a 450 sized deadcat style frame (no props in view no matter the situation) with 10x4.5 props and a 4s setup. Lots of power to carry camera and FPV gear. My next project will be a Y6 setup that runs on 6S hoping to carry a little more weight than a möbius or gopro and I want redundancy. What kind of camera you looking to carry? Ive read a lot of people using a sony nex 7 as their next step up.

Yea the nex 7 is probably what we are going to go with. The fact that they can shoot stills in RAW would be a huge advantage to putting a camera in the air. Hopefully go pro follows suit with their new cameras expected in October. What kind of flight times are you getting out of the 900?
