CNET
I assume this is the right board for this but if not admins can move it

Satellite TV provider Dish Network is reportedly considering a merger with AT&T's DirecTV service.
AT&T and Dish have no active deal talks ongoing, however, Reuters reported Friday.
quote:
Dish Network's spectrum holdings -- it has been hoarding spectrum for years but has yet to build out its own satellite network -- could also be a valuable acquisition for AT&T as it rolls out its 5G network.
Back in 2017, Dish Network spent $6.2 billion for even more spectrum in the 600MHz band.
The rumors follow reports on Thursday that AT&T could spin off the DirecTV business, with Dish Network tipped to buy it.

AT&T's DirecTV has been losing customers amid competition with streaming giants Netflix and Amazon Prime. In April, DirecTV reported a quarterly loss of 83,000 subscribers on its streaming service, which followed a loss of 267,000 subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2018.
DirecTV Now finished 2018 with 1.6 million subscribers; at the end of March, it had 1.5 million.
Also during the first quarter of 2019, AT&T lost 544,000 traditional pay TV subscribers from its DirecTV satellite business and its AT&T U-verse services. As of April, it had 22.4 million TV subscribers in total.
quote:
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson in April said he expects to continue losing pay TV subscribers next quarter, but for losses to stabilize by the end of 2019. He added that the recent $10 price hike to $50 per month for DirecTV Now makes the product more "sustainable."
"Make no mistake about it, this segment of the market is very price-sensitive," he said.
Dish and AT&T didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

I’ll allow it.
We don’t have a conglomerate board yet.

frick AT&T. I was with DirecTV for 12 years. AT&T bought them and fricked DirecTV all up. AT&T's customer service reps are god awful.
I wound up switching to Dish. Knowing my luck, AT&T will gobble up Dish and I'll be stuck with the AT&T retards again.

Nb4 “Use my account number when you sign up and we’ll both get $100 off!”

I doubt the DOJ allows this to happen.

This comes around every so often... Zero chance this would be allowed to happen

$50 per month for DirecTV Now
Exact price as cable. Called this as soon as people were jumping on the $20/month bandwagon. That price point was never sustainable

It’s sustainable, but corporate greed will always find a way to frick the consumer.

I agree, but people will continue to pay for it so they don’t care.

ATT should try and not over charge for their services.

AT&T buys DirecTV, which had one of the highest customer satisfaction rates in telecom. They all but abandon the actual satellite service in favor of the streaming service, which they rolled out at a damn good price point and gave away free Apple TVs to new customers. Then not even a year in, they had huge infrastructure problems and outages (sound familiar to AT&Ts cell service?) and made it worse by just cutting content and raising the price. They also now have one of the worst customer service ratings.
Color me shocked they are hemorrhaging customers.

They're on their last legs anyway. Satellite is a dying breed.

Yeah.... it really is a shitshow now compared to the past dealing with Directv directly.
ATT’s customer service reps for Directv are now in India or some shite. They are horrible to deal with .

After the merger, my account and billing got screwed up. Probably spent 4 hours (4-5 calls) on the phone with their customer reps trying to fix it but the couldn’t fix it. Ended up paying the early termination fees to get away from them. They are terrible.

Yeah.... I have 2 accounts ( house and camp)
1 of the accounts got moved over to the ATT billing side but the other one is still on the Directv billing side. (ATTs own timeframe evidently)
It’s a complete clusterfrick dealing with the Indian call center people getting them to figure the shite out

NOOOOOOOOOOO!
I switched to Dish from DirectV after AT&T bought them and the DirecTV service got buggy.

I doubt they allow it as well.
I'm not sure what Dish's plan is here. There is no way the FCC approves this, let alone the DOJ. They probably saw the T-Mobile/Sprint merger and felt like they needed to make a move. They have a buildout deadline coming up for their AWS-4 spectrum in early 2020.

I work in this industry and here a few nuggets
First off, DIRECTV is a product, not a company. AT&T in this scenario would simply sell it to dish and there would be one satellite provider
Secondly this rumor all started from 1 analyst who suggested it would make sense.
Honestly it’s not the worst idea. Satellite will be around but no need for two companies
AT&T is all in on it’s next gen video product that’s coming out in Q4 and I’ve gotten to demo. It’s pretty slick and it will be video face of AT&T
They are 175B in debt after the Time Warner deal so the analyst suggested this could be a way to unload some of it.
Also, to those saying they miss old DTV, trust me I know. They were a remarkably well run company and now are under the wing of worldwide conglomerate and the customers are seeing the fallout.

XM and Sirius were allowed to merge. I don't see anything getting in the way of DirecTV and Dish if the rumor is true.
