DirecTV and rain
Posted on 8/27/16 at 4:42 pm

I got DirecTV installed last Saturday and the signal goes out everytime it rains (has been almost everyday )
This is my first time with satellite TV , but I wasnt expecting this. I was told that newer satellite equipment shouldn't have problems with rain.
Is this normal to go out everytime it rains?

It's has to be a damn end of world storm for mine to go out. Check your satelite signals. Should be 99

this is correct. ive had satellite for 10 years and honestly it goes out for less than 10 minutes a year
a bad install is probably the reason. have them come back out and re position.
remember, it has to peak on an orbital slot in space. even being off by 1 degree can make a world of difference.

I guess I will need to do this then. It has only been a week, but it doesn't seem like it should be an everyday thing

It has to rain really, really hard south of you.

Same experience I've had. And almost everyone I know who has DirecTV has similar issues.
Yes, the installation can make a difference, but my signal strength is right up there and I still have this problem.

Agreed. I've had 2 different generations of dishes on the roof, and both suffer almost every time it rains. Both were "professional" installs.
LUS Fiber rarely went out in the event of a storm.

9 out of 10 professional sat installers are dipshits. If properly installed that won't happen unless it is a really bad storm.

Your bracket isn't secure enough to prevent the wind from causing deflection. Make sure it can't move at all. I had mine so damn tight that I gave up trying to remove it when I dropped dish. Son of a bitch is stubborn as hell.

You were lied to.

I have the most current Directv sat dish available and a genie dvr. My signal strength readings are 99s and 100s. I lose signal if there is heavy rain southwest of my house.
If you switch to the SD version you can usually still get a good enough signal to get a picture. By the time you have figured out how to do that the rain cloud has moved out of the way

Same here. I have to have a cable box for back up.

It doesn't have to be windy when mine goes out, just thick, tall clouds. I'm at 99+ on everything except local signals. If it's something important, I switch to SD. If my dish was moving so much, how would SD still work?

I live in Abita and it has rained everyday for 6 damn weeks. Sometimes heavy, sometimes not. I've lost signal for maybe 3 total minutes in 6 weeks. I've heard people have this issue but we've had direct tv for 12 years now and rain has never really been an issue for us in 3 different houses.

FWIW, I didn't lose DTV signal once during the all the rains that caused the floods. Your issue has got to be either the aim or a partial obstruction like a tree. I've also been told by a DTV tech that a coax run of over 75' can degrade the signal.

No.
However, if you're having great issues, switch it to standard definition during storms. HD channels go out first as your pulling from multiple satellites and if you lose one you lose them all.

I got Direct TV installed about 7 years ago. For the first year it was as you described, picture freezing and any hint of rain the picture was gone. I thought this was normal.
I had another problem that required a visit by an installer. I don't know what he did but what ever it was he fixed my system. No more freezes and it has to be a very heavey storm for me to lose the picture.

I got DT in 2007 while living in San Diego. I move to Mckenny, Tx in the summer of 2011. I had my first issue the first week of the fb season heavy rain affected every once in a while. I moved down to Alexandria in the spring of 2014 and I would lose signal every time it rains and during the beginning of football season(when DTV is the worst) any heavy cloud would kill my signal. Now imagine FOX's shitty signal during this shite storm. I finally gave them up in may though. I'll get it back when I need the Sunday Ticket again. Good riddance!! This is a permanent problem.

I've had Direct for 14 years now. It has gotten a LOT better. My SD channels never go out now, even in intense thunderstorms, and they used to go out all the time with just regular rain. The HD channels will lose signal in a bad thunderstorm or if there's a lot of lighting around, and in really heavy rain. Regular, steady rain doesn't impact it at all.
