The United States Department of Justice wants Google to sell off its Chrome browser as part of an ongoing antitrust lawsuit, reports Bloomberg. Earlier this year, Google was found to have a search monopoly, and antitrust regulators have since been deciding on the actions that should be taken to address Google's anticompetitive practices.

Selling off Chrome won't make them not have a search monopoly

Typical government meddling too little too late irrelevant.
What's next? They going to break up Smith Corona and Kodak?

While I think this is stupid, over-reach and will get pulled back next year, Google search monopoly is not the problem. It wasn't an issue in the 1990's when I started using google and it's not a problem now.
The problem/issue is how google now uses your search queries to target ads to you.

Isn’t Chrome just a Google-branded version of Chromium? I’m not really sure how a freeware version of an open-source browser is anticompetitive.
I don’t disagree with the idea that Google as a whole engages in a ton of anticompetitive practices, but this sounds like the DOJ grasping at straws rather than actually trying to address the (very complex/nuanced) business model at the root of the problem.

Created and still controlled by Google

My comment here is not relevant, but I do like to think about the history of these things. Chromium is based on / forked from Apple's WebKit, which itself was forked from KHTML by the KDE Project.
Or maybe it is kind of relevant, goes to show how anything positive that is given to the world with good and pure intent will always be taken and manipulated to take advantage of us.

i'm old enough to remember when PGP ruled the web and the EFF was out in front of the Internet explosion working to protect our privacy before we lost it.
:/
"information wants to be free"
anyone heard from the guttenberg project lately?
*sigh* I long for the days when i read bruce sterling and william gibson novels and had a subscription to Boing Boing, 2600 and WIRED.
i devoured every issue COVER TO COVER. even forced myself to read the articles that weren't particularly good.
i spent all my time on listservs, gopher, archie and jughead. FTP and Usenet were magical worlds that delivered things to my PC.
oh i was so optimistic at our glorious electronic future utopia.
my brother 'ran into' michael crichton on a BBS and spent 2 hours on his Amiga 1000 dialup 2400 baud modem asking him questions and saving the chat.
eta i wonder if my VAX-email account is still active.

You forgot Veronica and WAIS

The early internet was truly special compared to what it has become. I miss SwampNet and FidoNet and even Compuserve and Delphi. It cost more but was better in many ways with the way too much garbage and data mining make the internet a chore these days. I think you had more privacy when you actually logged on to a company's server like Compuserve or Delphi.

Monopolies are a big problem and our gov't has let it happen despite the laws on the books to prevent it.
Just look at who controls all the major players in just about any sector and you will find out a lot.
