Make them go look in the back.
Find a second person and have them look.
I got the manager to sell me a different game for 75 street they couldn't find any of the TWELVE space Invaders they showed in stock.
They have them. They are just so freaking disorganized they can't find them.

I did. He went in the back. I asked him if he could sell me one at the discount and he said no because it's newer stock. Fail

Heading to another store for a Rampage. The lady put her hands on it. Not exactly what I wanted, but I assume it'll be easily modded to add a bunch of games.

Oh good. Got it!! Feels like I robbed the store. Ha. The dude checking me out was like "dang, how's that so cheap"

CAD, et al, if you are contemplating doing a virtual pinball machine, Best Buy has Insignia 43" 1080p very thin bezel TVs (playfield) for $139. Picked mine up yesterday.

Ready to begin modding! I couldn't wait; had to put the new spinner in at least so I could enjoy Tempest. What a difference the upgraded spinner makes. Original spinner is hot garbage.

Looks great. I don't know what to do with this 3 player rampage stock control panel. Do I swap out whole thing or add buttons to each of the 3 players. Do I change to only 2 players. How many buttons for each to work for majority of games. Where to put them. Do I need to wait for Pi 4 or get the one that's currently functioning.
Driving me crazy.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Get a RPi 4, retropie should be out soon
Do a 2 player 6 or 7 button layout. Don’t do straight buttons, it’s much comfortable to do the curve layout.

follow every DAM word.

also hit up arcade1up sub on reddit. lots of posts of people drilling out the rampage cabinets. do a search on 'rampage mods'
go ahead & assemble the whole thing, i wouldn't tighten the screws down on the control panel and don't screw in the back panel. get a piece of velcro instead because you're going to have that back panel off constantly

the screws go into metal connectors for the control panel so no worries about stripping the particle board there but i would avoid tightening them down too much until you've finished customizing (which may never end)

the non-led button/joystick kit is $34, if you want the buttons to light up the kit is $40. the other stuff is in the guide; not much to this process at all.
the main thing is picking a good CPU (hence the Pi 4) and a good ROM image (arcadepunks.com)

Keep waiting for a price drop in my area so I can waste some money on this crap.
Posted on 12/9/19 at 3:45 pm to CAD703X
Whats the reasoning for using a 2-player cab instead of a 4-player cab like TMNT? Is it just to save in the price or is there an issue modding for a 4-person setup?
Posted on 12/9/19 at 5:59 pm to TTownTiger
I'm actually considering getting one for a fighter cab now. I got some leftover hardware from my build. Might be a good time.
These are small cabs compared to normal size cabs and 4 player cabs like TMNT were even bigger than normal size and had bigger screen size and room to put a control panel big enough to support 4 player.
Real estate limitation, you could put 4 player 4 button setups, but it would be a very close affair to play all 4 player.

Ok, hold the phone a couple of new wrinkles.
If you're planning to order the LCD-control board from amazon (around $25) you may want to skip that entirely and just pick up a Dell 1704 (17") or Dell 1914S (19" IPS) for around $30 or $40 (or $6 at Salvation army) instead.
These monitors are *MUCH* better (esp. the IPS one) than the stock 1up monitor and swap out perfectly plus you get a couple of extra USB inputs for free.
I'm still doing some research on this but for a $15 difference (maybe even less b/c there are a hundred million bazillion of these dell monitors around) this would be a significant upgrade.
In particular the 17" upgrade seems like a no-brainer

Ok, so at this point while this seems to be getting slightly more complex; i'm not really adding much in terms of cost and in fact, if i can find an old monitor i may end up saving money.

To mount it, I just ran machine screws through the existing monitor mount holes with washers on either end that overlap the metal rim of the screen (and a nut on one side, of course). Nothing to it. Note that I removed the actual panel from the plastic monitor case first. Once you do that the panel is a perfect fit for the hole in the Asteroids cab.

OK, mind blown. just realized i have 2 old sets of cambridge soundworks speaker cubes + sub laying around. this was an amazing sounding system back in the day and its totally overkill for this cabinet but they're sitting in the 'going to goodwill' stack for about a year but i couldn't bring myself to do it.
so i'm about to add the joy of a sub "thump" and stereo and the WTF moment came when i remember they have a volume control on a cable
i can literally run that through the cabinet without cutting a big hole anywhere and mount it under the control panel.
so, amazon is getting back:
- LCD controller: $25
- amp & power: $16
so that saves me over $40 on the process and getting MUCH BETTER upgrades in the process.
i just found a computer store about 1/2 mile away with those 17" monitors for $6 so i'm heading over there in just a minute.

Tell the truth Wednesday.
I bought a control panel fully equipped with everything including pi and controls for a quick and easy installation. Plug and play with SD card and all games as well. I don't have time to modify it before Christmas so this was my only option to be done in time.
Don't judge me. :)

Mine too. I'm surprised that someone that asks as many stupid questions as you do on this board is able to do something like this.

Not judging at all. I'm just the cheapest bastard on the entire planet and I have a feeling my friends are also going to want me to help them so I'm looking to get the most for the least.
I'm stoked because the display and the cpu are the 2 just important parts of this process and 17" 4:3 and 20" 4:3 monitors are so plentiful you can practically find them for free and those Dell displays were too of the line back in the day.
The only other consideration is whether I want to deal with fricking windows on a cheap pc or wait on that sweet arse pi 4 which literally boots right into the game ux on restart.
This first cabinet is an exercise in compromises with regards to control panel but it's a total experiment so I can see what I don't like about all the consoles and arcade games, if 17" is too small, etc.
I'm definitely getting star wars and probably won't mod it. It's just too badass like it is.
Hell I'm going to end up with at least 4 cabinets I can already see it.

Thanks. I will have more time to tinker in the future for sure and wouldn't mind building out my own machine next. Will continue following this thread and others online!
Thanks fellas
