Let me help you guys with your xmas shopping... I just discovered 'virtual pinball' machines.
Holy crap, picture this, a full size pinball cabinet (smaller available too) with an LCD playing field! Of course add in the software bundle named Visual Pinball, now design and modify your own playing fields.
That squealing noise you are hearing are the wheels in my head reaching 7200rpm. Lots of researching to do now. The prefabbed cab's sell for big money. Nothing I cannot fabricate easily enough for pennies on the dollar.

Yup. Been following this guy's unboxing.

Jump to 6:20 to see him start playing pinball.
i asked him to demonstrate Black Knight or Space Invaders but he hasn't yet.

Virtual pinball kills what I like about real pinball. All the mechanisms and tracks and real objects are the best part.
if you look at the video there's lots of mechanical 'thumping' and other tactile responses to make it feel as if you're playing a real pinball machine.
having said that, i dont know how you can replicate a 'real' pinball machine but i also don't know how i can ever 'relive' my youth when most of those pinball machines are out to pasture now. this is the best compromise that exists at the moment. :/
From the limited research so far.. there is an accelerometer board that senses movement of the cabinet and translates that to the virtual ball...so bumping the cabinet can change the ball travel, too much should fire off a Tilt. So far it looks pretty cool.
Lots more reading to do, but I think I have my first bigger project for the new year lined up, let the sawdust fly!

I mean it's great if you want several types of pinball games and challenges. For me at least, if I got something like that, it would have to be an actual pinball cab. I want the real thing, it can't be replicated. It's the mechanical design of it that attracts me to look and enjoy a pinball cabinet. It being just a screen kills that for me.

The 'analog' pinball machines were and are great. Getting my hands on an original working 8 Ball Deluxe machine would be the holy grail for me. I've actually passed up deals on this machine twice...because of replacement parts, if they were available the dude would have fixed it and sold for 5 times as much.
the costs of maintenance and upkeep is getting astronomical....William's still exists but as a slot machine company now, Midway is now part of William's, I don't think Bally exists outside of Hotels. So buying replacement parts from a finite supply of stock must be at an ever rising premium.

Yeah, I will probably never own one anyway. The simulation is neat and cool for people that want to play a ton. If I got one, it would be more of a show piece than a use all the time thing.

i have an evel kennivel pinball machine at my parent's house that i was able to get working for maybe..6 months
the amount of work required to keep the mechanical parts working on something that is bumped around and has so many pop-up parts on is insane. i don't see how arcades ever made any money off these.
having said that, dam the best of both worlds would be to find your 'dream' pinball machine and simply add the 'virtual' overlay (2 large monitors and some buttons) when you wanted choice but i can't see much of a market for that.

Most ROMS are set to vertical cab by default, some/many have a 'dip switch' that can be set for cocktail tables to flip the screen.
So you shouldn't have to do anything but program your buttons, joysticks, and coin slot if used and you are good to go.

Finally ordered my art work for the Asteroids cab. Once I get that in, I will start taking pictures of the mods and posting them to see the final product. I had an old rasperry pi 3 that will be sufficient for the nes cab so I spent a little more of the artwork. Buttons and sticks are the next priority for this retro machine.
Running Total:
Cab - $90
Art - $90

Thanks for all the info guys.
My kid wanted the Pac Man 1up machine as soon as he saw it. He didnt ask for much else besides it. I think I will be getting the Golden Tee machine for myself at some point.
I picked up the machine today and I'm going to make it even cooler doing the upgrades you guys are discussing.
Keep the info flowing this is a good thread.
Ps. Is the pac man machine a vertical screen? Also is the Pac Man a first gen unit? Doesnt matter as I'm replacing all the buttons anyway but just wondering.

Yes its vertical and gen 1
These are all GEN 1.
I believe all gen 2 are horizontal (maybe golden tee is the exception)
Here is the link to some of the recommended parts. Please check your monitor model # as well

Gen-1 game = single-core A13 SoC: Atari 12-in-1, Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe ("6-in-1"), Centipede, Final Fight, Galaga, Pacman, Rampage, Space Invaders, Street Fighter 2.
Gen-2 game = quad-core H3 SoC: Mortal Kombat, Golden Tee (probably), and all Counter-cade games. (Not sure where Karate Champ will fit - probably Gen2.)

i spent an extra $10 to get these buttons:

was going to put the insert coin buttons on the down panel...but then i just discovered this today for $6

On the hunt for blinking red start buttons too. That would be extra sweet; I still remember the feeling of seeing the button light up after sliding in a quarter.

Also downloaded and burned 128GB MAME image to a microSD card ready to put into my Pi. Its only a 2B Pi so I'm hoping it works good enough for now until the 4 is ready.

Yeah the little details is really what makes this fun and bring back memories. Once you finish the cab, you should be able to stick the 4 in their and go but you will have to redo the buttons.
That 2b will def work on all of the nostalgia mames but the others it might melt it! Im headed to home depot as we speak to try and match the laminate control panel and start practicing my drilling.

Help Needed
I can get this one for $75 locally.
Street Fighter 2 Arcade Machine, Arcade1UP, 4ft
SKU: 994342377
UPC: 815221022867
Is this a good unit to mod into one with a lot of games?
I'm clueless and really don't want to buy a bunch of cabinets.
I can also get this one locally.
Rampage Arcade Machine, Arcade1UP, 4ft
SKU: 114274755
UPC: 815221022898
Which one would give me the easiest route to mod with least drilling and such.
