Can't resist dropping a couple of pics of the cocktail table I built for last xmas's project. I tried but just couldn't bring myself to use MDF for the cabinet so oak was the obvious choice. Still contemplating wether or not to add the coin door for quarters/tokens. Running RetroPi on a Pi3, loaded with about 10K games.
I did end up changing out the joysticks for much more durable arcade quality ones.
ETA: My plan was to build another 2 player standing cabinet, but was promptly overruled.

Wow great work there.
I always wanted to do that but at I get older the possibility is going rapidly. The wife has plenty of things to keep me busy.

ok so i'm going to start with my asteroids 1up.
This is a gen1 unit which means no stereo speakers, lame CPU, cheap plastic joysticks and buttons.
Upgrades
- wholesale replace control panel with better quality joysticks & buttons
- light up marquee
- stereo speakers
- new CPU (retroPi)
Since I paid $75 for the cabinet, i'm hoping to do all the updates out-the-door for under $400.
It looks like I will need
- box of joyticks & buttons (around $40 on amazon/ebay)
- raspberry pi with 32GB arcade game image (around $35)
- hdmi control board for current display ($15)
- USB control board to connect the new buttons ($10 or so) and to connect to pi
- 2 matching speakers
- plexiglass marquee with LED lightstrip
- custom graphics for control board & marquee
- power strip ($3)
- pre-cut panel or possibly drill out my existing one for new buttons
As i start to purchase the items I'll post updates. I'm opting for a pi for now since this is my first attempt and those are super cheap and are so tiny you can mount them inside with double-sided tape.
eta it looks like i can buy the pre-made control panel and light-up marquee with custom graphics of my choosing for cheap so i'm going to splurge and get those pre-made.

I would love to get a pole position unit if those are legit like the real ones.

Where are you seeing this? I went with another cabinet and prefer not to have to drill my own holes. I will start posting my build as well.
CAD BEFORE you start putting it together, make a cut out of all parts. I am doing this so I can have a template to see if that comes out cheaper just to cut it myself. It never hurts to have cutout parts just in case.

Going bottom or top install? Be careful to check out stick length based on install. I like the Happs, but ended up with Sanwa JLFs. Ended up with some ClassX from groovy game gear for buttons because the Electric Ice ones are top notch for RGB LEDs.

Retropie, yes there is an e there, is great. $30 for a device you can play a ton of retro games and mount behind a TV without being noticeable and also use it as a kodi device is a great deal. I wouldn’t use it in a multicade, would definitely be a great way to go for a minicade though. As the pi gets more powerful, it’s just going to get better. People are seeing great results with the 4 running unofficial images.

Guys, this is serious.
How can I get a standup Pole Position unit?

Just but an Nvidia shield
I have seen no tutorials about running this through a cabinet hence the retropie/mini cpu.
I have one of these sitting around but nothing on how to enable joystick controls and buttons to hook up to the nvidia

For about 3K you can get the real thing. I havent seen any homemade cab with a steering wheel

Sounds great. Lets play a GameCube came?
Oh wait, it can't.
No one wants to play gamecube at our ages. Its basically for nostalgia from 1980-1999. I would much rather play Rally X than Mortal Combat. Atari/NES/Sega right in the wheel house.
For more modern games, I agree, the pi wont cut it.
PS: CAD email ps3hgtv at the gee or anyone else that is interested. I can see about getting you those mame files. Also, since your working with the vertical screen on that cabinet, I have the list of vertical games for the mame. You will just need to go through them and eliminate several (clones) in the text file

A few extra dollars for real hardware like an Nvidia Shield pays off in the end.
It’s a bit more then a few extra dollars. It’s dirt cheap to get a few Retropies running to the cost of one shield. I got them all over my house for retro fun and keep one in my go bag for work travel. I got a full stand up cab with a much more powerful computer over a shitty shield if I want to game out on retro that the raspberry pi can’t handle.

Did this one last year. Has a bunch more games from the 80s. Made from an old ms Pac-Man cabinet. Added lcd panel. Tube was going out.

That looks fantastic! I looked at the cocktail but it looked too complicated to restore. Is that one modded to fast play?

1up Marquee light up kit with 100s of graphics (even your own choosing) $59 free shipping
i'm keeping mine with classic asteroids to match the rest of the cabinet

but for my second cabinet i might go with one of the multicade marquees.
here are a couple of samples; none really stand out to me though.

Here's a pic of similar mods (no light up marquee on this one) of what i'm doing to my asteroids unit. Note
- stereo speakers
- new control panel

The cocktail table was in rough shape and it had the 80s fake wood contact paper. Removed that and patched some of the bad wood. Then recovered in black laminate.
I still have the old boards, but used one of the 100 in 1 boards from amazon. It has the setting for the speedy option on all the pac mans. The original board also had the speedy chip on it too.
I almost went back original board with the new lcd but was overruled by the wife and kids. They wanted more than just ms pac man. The only thing really modded is I ordered new controls from an arcade place with two buttons on each side vs the original 1 2 player on one side and only joystick on the other. The replacement joysticks use the micro switches and not the reed switches of the original. Took them a little while to get used to those but they have survived.
Between supplies, new glass, and graphics under the glass I’m probably in it for a little over a grand. Way more than it’s worth, but we have had it forever and it was one of those everyone wanted it regardless of the cost things. They did make them well, pretty much the whole cabinet is 3/4 plywood with the top being two sheets thick.
When I had it all apart I should have taken measurements or made patterns.

I have done this a few times. I have an original ms pacman and galaga (not finished) and built my own cabinet. I downloaded every arcade and console game (including shooters on arcade like area51) you would be surprised how large the old arcade games were.
I then wrote my own launcher program to preview and open all games. It literally had every game for every console pre-ps. This was back in 2010 and worked really well.
I used a board to convert the joystick input to USB and wired it all myself. Added a roller ball for golden tee as well. I got all the pictures if anyone is interested. It was a good hobby for a few months.
