Be aware that some of the apps that work with philips cause one of your bulbs to stay on sometimes. I had to reset the hub to get them back to normal. Overall, I love the ambiant feature and got it on sale at 139 as well...

I believe the bulbs are hub free bulbs. You should be able to control them after downloading the alexa skill. If they were Hue, you need the hub. The only thing the smarthings hub does it put everthing you can control on one screen. Its basically a GUI...

you have to side load the google play store on the HD 10 and sometimes it still doesnt work with google. You are then stuck with amazon app store only as a tablet...
